INTERESTS OF CITIZENS
NEW SECURITY BUILDING REPLY TO PRIME MINISTER I Per Pies. Asscciation.J WELLINGTON, Feb. 9. “It is quite incorrect to suggest that the Wellington City Council is anxious to find some means of stopping the Government from proceeding with the social security scheme." said the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, in referring to the Prime Minister’s comments on the City Council’s views regarding the closeness of the new social security building to the footpath. “Pursuant to the council’s resolution I, yesterday, with officers of the council, interviewed by their invitation the Hons. D. Sullivan and W. Nash," said Mr. Hislop. “Our discussions were characterised by a spirit of mutual helpfulness, and as a result I shall be able to report to the council on lines which 1 think will be generally satisfactory. I think it can be said that the citizens’ interests have now been protected.” Difficulties arising from the Government’s intention to erect the new building close to the existing road frontage in Aotea Quay have been resolved as the result of discussions between Mr. Hislop, City Council officers and the Government, it was stated following the discussions. Arrangements made provide for ample access for cars by a roadway along the rear of the building and for a parking space alongside the building but off the roadway.
