ANGLO-FRENCH ALLIANCE
CHAMBERLAIN'S STATEMENT COMMENT IN ROME Received Feb. 9, 9.30 p.m. ROME, Feb. 9. The journal Diplomatic Information declares that Air. Chamberlain did not surprise responsible quarters when he stressed Anglo-French solidarity because he made a similar declaration during his visit to Rome. The journal adds that “French ant (-Fascists who, in exaggerated jubilation, refer to Italy’s consternation, make a gross error. Italy is not disturbed because she has long recognised the existence of a real Anglo-French military alliance which is naturally defensive, but there is no need for us to entertain too many illusions as to its meaning.” MUSSOLINI’S PIQUE? Received Feb. 9, 10.30 p.m, LONDON, Feb. 9. The Rome correspondent of The Times says that it is always dillicult to know what importance can be attached to Diplomatic Information’s communications, which are not merely semi-official but are believed to be often drafted by Signor Mussolini. The best explanation of the present communique seems that it is an abrupt and spontaneous explosion corresponding to a passing mood and betrays bitterness in the suggestion of a realisation of Anglo-French military inter-dependence which has surprised and disappointed Italy. The correspondent concludes from the article that Signor Mussolini is piqued by French newspaper comment.
