WANGANUI CENTRE SIX RECORDS BROKEN DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS Six records were lowered at the first night of the Wanganui Swimming Centre's annual district championships I in the St. George's Gate baths last ■ night. Conditions were good and the i races were watched by a large crowd | of spectators. Entries were poor and in five events there were only one starter and in several others only two. Close finishes were the order of the night. H. Da\is (Gonville), who represented Wanganui at the recent junior and intermediate championships at Rotorua, lowered the records for the 50 yards junior boys and the 220 junior boys. In lhe latter event he lowered his own record by 15 2-ssecs. ' and in doing so did not appear to be exerting himself. Others who lowered records were Miss P. Watts (50 yards intermediate girls' backstroke), R. McKillop (100 yards men’s breaststroke), Miss P. Cave (75 yards girls' intermediate breaststroke), and K. Welsh (100 yards men's backstroke). Results were as follow:

100 Yards Junior Girls’ Championship (title-holder, B. Coull; record, P. Watts, 71 l-ssec.) P. Nixon (Central) 1, P. Clayton (Central) 2, P. Gardiner (Central) 3. Time, 73sec. Four starters. Won by four feet. 50 Yards Intermediate Boys’ Championship (title-holder, G. Walton; record, G. Walton, 29 3-ssec.)—First heat: A. Wilks (Wanganui East) 1, G. Walton (Gonville) 2. Time, 29 4-ssecs. Second heat: K. Mcßrearty (Gonville) 1, B. Breed (Wanganui East) 2. Time, 29 4-ssec. Third heat: J. Clarke (Wanganui East) and A. White (Aramoho) dead-heat 1, J. Row (Gonville) 3. Time, 31secs. Final: Walton 1, Wilks 2, Mcßrearty 3. Time, 30secs. A very close finish.

100 Yards Intermediate Girls’ Championship (title-holder, P. Watts; record, P. Watts, 69secs.)—P. Watts (Central) 1, B. Coull (Central) 2, L. Fennell (Gonville) 3. Time, 69 1-5 secs. Miss Watts won by half a length of the baths, Miss Coull .just beating Miss Fennell. Six starters.

Time, 68secs. Miss Cave went to the lead from the start and won by half a length to lower the record oy l-ssec. M. Watt (Central) was disqualified for breaking. Four starters.

100 Yards Intermediate Boys' Breaststroke Championship (titleholder, L. Mitchell; record, W. Boyd, 83 2-ssecs.)—R. Lovett (Gonville) 1, G. Doyle (Wanganui East) 2. Time, 81 l-ssecs. Lovett won easily to lower the record by 2 l-ssecs. Only two starters.

440 Yards Men's Championship (title-holder, B. Haworth; record, H. Gowan, smin. 44secs.)—V. B. Haworth (Central) .1, A. Kendall (Central) 2, R. W. Girling (Waverley) 3. Time. smin. 46secs. Haworth look the lead in the first lap and won from Kendal! by 10 yards. Girling and R. Payne (Central) were two lengths behind the winner. Four starters. 220 Yards Intermediate Boys’ Championship (title-holder, 1. Mitchell; record, C. Bullivant, 2min. 45»secs.)—D. McGregor (Central) 1, G. Paterson (Gonville) 2, J. Rowe (Gonville) 3. Time, 3min. 4secs. McGregor won by 10 yards with two feet between second and third.
