TAIHAPE RETURNED SOLDIERS

MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The monthly meeting of the Taihape and District Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Friday evening when Mr. W. J. White occupied the chair in the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr. L. E. Lyons). Also present were Messrs. L. Haydon, A. C. Aldridge, Stevens, Stead. McLaren, Macfarlane, F. White, Niven, Berridge, Spence and the secretary (Mr. J. M. Scott). Apologies were received from Messrs. Martin, Lyons, Bossworth, H. D. Arthur. It was reported that 11 headstones had been ordered for the soldiers* plot at the cemetery, and a "working bee” comprising Messrs. F. White, H. D. Arthur, and J. M. Scott, was formed to erect the stones. It was resolved that the matters concerning the N.Z. Defence League be discussed at the next meeting. The meeting decided to ask headquarters to approach the Pensions Department with a view to having the War Veterans’ Allowance paid on Pension Day instead of the last day of the month, as at present. The treasurer reported that the New Year's dance showed a profit of £ll. It was resolved that the 1940 dance be held on New Year's Eve.
