TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
SEQUEL TO A COLLISION MARTON MAGISTRATE'S COURT (Own Correspondent). MARTON, Feb. 9. A collision between a motor-van driven by Edward John Vernon Lewis, Marton, and a motor-cycle ridden byLeslie Mercer, Marton, at the corner of Lawson Street and Golding’s Line on December 24, had its sequel in the Marton Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday afternoon, when Lewis was charged with driving a motor-car without due care and attention. Lewis, who pleaded not guilty, was represented by Mr. K. A. Williams. Sergeant T. F. Brenchlcy, who prosecuted, said the accident occurred at a corner where a high hedge was growing, making visibility very poor. Defendant went to turn into Lawson St. and cut the corner, colliding with the cyclist, who received concussion and abrasions. The cycle was extensively damaged. Lewis, in a statement to the police, estimated the speed of the cycle at between 35 and 40 m.p.h. He himself was doing 18 m.p.h. and slowed down to 10 m.p.h. Mr. Williams submitted that defendant was driving with care and attention. The moment defendant saw the cycle he swerved immediately to the right and stopped, but the cyclist clid not appear to see him. The magistrate, however, said defendant was guilty of breaches of the regulations—not keeping to the left, and failing to give way to traffic approaching from the right. The fine imposed was 30s, costs 23.5. In the following undefended civil cases before Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M.. judgment was given for plaintiff:—A. Gracie v. H. Jenson, £l7 5s Id, costs £3 14s; A. Gracie v. R. C. Gordon, jun., 15s 6d, costs 3s; Low’s, Ltd., v. ~R. M. Kennedy, Bs, costs 3s; Low’s,
Ltd., v. P. Waller, £2 12s 6d, costs £2 6s 6d; Low’s, Ltd., v. I. Hamilton, 13s, costs 15s; Low’s, Ltd., v. Dan Whai, £1 7s 6d, costs, £1 ss. William Rogan, a Maori, was charged with assault on Michael Nicholas Hogan, Commissioner of the Ratana Pa police. The magistrate, Mr. R. M. Watson, ordered accused to take out a prohibition order and convicted and fined him £2, half of the fine to go to Hogan. LAWN TENNIS On Saturday the Marton St. Andrew’s Tennis Club will be playing a match against the Rata Club in connection with the Wanganui “C” grade competition. This match will be played on the St. Andrew's courts at Marton. The St. Andrew’s team will be selected from the following:—Men: R. C. Ball, F. G. M. Parkinson, R. K. Jones and B. Sawyer (one to be dropped). Ladies: Mrs. R. C. Ball, Misses Partridge, P. Brown, M. Hunter and D. Dommett (one to be dropped).
