PROPOSAL LOST
“DIE STEM" AS SOLE NATIONAL ANTHEM CAPETOWN, Feb. 8. The National Assembly, by 88 voles to 22, rejected the .Nationalist proposal that “Die Stem” should forthwith be recognised as South Africa’s only National Anthem. The Prime Minister, General Hertzog, declared that his party would never allow the Africaans-speaking section of the people to inflict inequality or unfairness on the Englishspeaking section in South Africa. A Government amendment that time and not government could enforce such a proposal was afterwards carried.
