MARTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

(Own Correspondent.) MARTON, Feb. 8. The Marton Borough Council met on Wednesday evening, the Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) presiding over Crs. T. Barton, A. Mclndoe W. J. Mogridge, K. A. Williams, J. R. Howard, W. B. Winchcombe, A. J. B. Sicely and Mr. C. C. McDonald (town clerk). The restriction of garden hosing was icft in the hands of the Mayor. The treasurer reported that the receipts for the month were £l7OO 10s 7d, including rates £761 11s, gas turners £266 6s Bd, Town Hall £75, water fees £154 14s. A circular letter from the Waitara Borough Council stated that the Internal Affairs Department had been approached with a view to the issue of model by-laws to be adopted in whole or part with little expense and suggesting that the council support the proposal.—Received. The Medical Officer of Health wrote advising that Inspector J. V. E. Flowers has been appointed inspector of health at Marton as from January 30, 1939. Mr. Flower was appointed sanitary inspector for Marton and appreciation of Mr. Steel’s services was recorded. The Carterton Borough Council forwarded subscription to the Small Gas Works Association of N.Z. (Incorp.) and advised that the council considers that the whole matter has been handled in a highly competent manner, and the results obtained eminently satisfactory.—Received. The chairman of the Greatford School Committee wrote asking permission for Greatford school children to use the baths one day a week.— Granted provided a competent person is in charge of the children. The division tocretary of St. John Ambulance, Marton Division, wrote asking the council for permission to keep a stretcher and first aid outfit at the Fire Station.—Granted subject to the approval of the fire brigade authorities. The town clerk, Fciluing Borough Council, wrote advising that the Provincial Centennial Committee has approved of the design for a memorial hall and bathing pavilion ’o be erected at Peione at an estimated cost of fIO.OCO, and giving the basis of contribution which the provincial committee considers a fair one. Each zone is requested to undertake the finding rf its quota either by subscription or local body payments. A meeting of Zone E will be held ar Feilding on 16th inst. at 8 p.m. to consider trie matter, and details of the proposed allocation between local authorities within Zone E are submitted.—Referred to the Mayor to interview the chairman of Zone E. Centennial Park. The Mayor stated that a movement had been made in the direction of acquiring 6i acres from Mr. J. Hannan, North Broadway, with a half chain frontage for £77.5, for a centennial park and camping area. It would require £lOOO 1o finalise the purchase, of which the Government subsidy would be £250. The site was very central and it was an excellent opportunity to provide for future generations. The meeting unanimously agreed to endorse the action of the Mayor in securing Mr. Hannan’s property for a centennial park and that those present. assist with the project and also to assist, in the baby carnival. The following carnival committee was formed: Dr. Church, Messrs. M. Atkinson, F. C. Ward, W. G. Aitken H. Richards. F. Low, W. Jacobs, R. G.’ Turnbull, W. H. Sawyer, E. G. Frederick, A. B. Marshal], C. Stafford, L. McGrath, Mrs. M, Thompson. with power to act. The committee will meet next Wednesday at the Borough Council Chambers.

Gas Manager’s Report Mr. A. J. Holden, gas manager, reported as follows: “During the month 55 tons lewt. of coal were carbonised, yielding 803,000 cubic feet of gas equal to 14,800 feet to the ton, A.n average of six and a half bags of coke to the ton was obtained. During the month six meters were issued—four ordinary and two slot—and three cookers, one combination and one copper were fitted.”

Overseer's Report Mr. W. R. Brant reported:— "Four water leaks on» mains have been repaired and two water connections have been installed. Repairs to the fence have been carried out at the swimming baths. "Tutaenui Road, Main Highway.— Fifteen chains 12 feet wide. This portion of the road has been recoated with screened metal and rolled. One coat of tar has been applied. “Cubbabballa Street.—Have excavated and laid 25 chains of concrete kerb and channel. The footpath has been filled in where required and the side of the road graded and metalled. The reservoir is holding 22 feet nine ' inches of water, and embankments are in good order.”
