DOMINION DEFENCE
NO NEED TO BECOME “ EXCITED ” ATTITUDE OF PRIME MINISTER [ Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Feb. 8. “I know* of no special reason why people should get excited concerning the defence position at this stage,’' said the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, over the long-distance telephone when asked if the Governi ment were contemplating any new’ measures for recruiting or New Zealand’s defence. “When Mr. J. A. Lyons made his statement on Australian defence some time ago the Leader of the Opposition (Mr. J. Curtin) endeavoured to have a special session of Parliament called to find out what it w’as ail about. Excitement will get nobcciy anywhere. The Government is responsible for making all preparations for the defence of the country. “We are moving as rapidly as we can with the defence of the Dominion and that applies to evry arm of the service. We can gain nothing by making hysterical statements. At lhe proper time and in the ordinary w'ay everybody will know exactly what the Government is doing.”
