TRIP TO AUSTRALIA

RETURNED SOLDIERS’ SONS (Own Correspondent) TAIHAPE, Feb. 7. The Dominion Executive Committee of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association has received an invitation for a party of 50 sons of New Zealand returned soldiers to visit Sydney for the purpose of a holiday of approximately 14 days. The invitation is from the A.I.F. Wives’ and Children's Holiday Association, which body controls Furlough House, where the New Zealand boys will be accommodated. Furlough House, admirably situated close to Sydney, on the ocean beach, and adjacent to the lakes, is a holiday or rest, home at which wives and children of A.I.F. members throughout New South Wales are afforded a holiday. The age limit of the boys eligible for the trip is from 12 to 14 years. The travelling expenses are to be paid by the parents, and the cost of the steamer fare will be advised later. Subject to confirmation from the Union Steam Ship Co., the boys should leave Wellington on April 3, 1939, per the Awatea, and should arrive back in Wellington on April 21, 1939. It is proposed that a suitable officer in charge of the boys will be appointed. On arrival at Sydney, Ihe -boys will be met at. the steamer by the president and executive members and officers and will be transported to Furlough House at Narrabeen. Entertainment will include a visit to Government House. An itinerary has been arranged so that, every day has its special feature and all places in and around Sydney are to be included in the sightseeing. Representations have been made by the Dominion headquarters. N.Z.R.S.A. to the Union Steam Ship Co. regarding the berthing accommodation and fares for the trip, also to the Minister of Railways for rail concession to and from the port of embarkation. In view of the fact that only fifty boys between the ages of 12 and 14 years are invited, a ballot may be necessary. In the meantime it is requested that each association should make arrangements for the listing of five boys. These applications will be fonvarded to Dominion headquarters by the association concerned on or before February 20. On receipt of the applications it will be decided if a. ballot is necessary.
