PLUNKET SHIELD
Trophy Retained By Auckland DEFEAT OF WELLINGTON AN INNINGS VICTORY [ Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Feb. 5. Auckland beat Wellington by an innings and 35 ru.ns in the Plunket Shield cricket match which was completed at Eden Park to-day and thereby retained the trophy. In reply to Auckland's score of 489 Wellington made 239 in the first innings, and at stumps yesterday, had made 180 for seven wickets in the second innings. The innings closed this morning for 215 (Rainbird 52). The overnight batsmen were Rainbird (33) and Gallichan (0). Fourteen runs had been added when, in Cowie’s third over, Gallicha.n was tempted to play a ball well on the off and was caught by' Vivian at second slip.—l94—B—9. In the next over Cowie turned the tables on Pritchard, who had bowled him at the end of the Auckland innings, and scattered Pritchard’s stumps. Fifty-four runs were still wanted to avoid an innings defeat when Ashenden, the last man, came in. Rainbird, who was shaping confidently, placed Cowie to the leg boundary and reached 50 with a brace off the same bowler.
Carson was then brought on in place of Cowie and his first ball settled the match, Rainbird pushing it up to Cowie at mid-o.n. It was an excellent innings by Rainbird and he confirmed the good impression which he made in his first knock. WIN FOR CANTERBURY FIVE WICKETS TO SPARE VALUABLE INNINGS BY SHAND [ free Assocl«tio«.l DUI4EDIN, Feb. 7. ! The Canterbury-Otago Plunket Shield match at Carisbrook was finished at 3 o'clock this af’ernoon, expectations of an interesting last day disappearing when the remaining Canterbury batsmen settled down to steady scoring. The result was a wm for Canterbury outright by five
wickets. The conditions to-day were not j pleasant, particularly for the fielding side. A strong south-westerly wind brought rain with it and there were two sharp downpours soon after midday. The day's play began with Canterbury in the position of having Io score 178 runs with seven wickets in hand for an eight-point win. The wicket had dried out and was in good order for run-getting, and it was soon evident that the not-out batsmen, C. R. Shand and F. W. Bellamy, were sight- j ing the ball well. Bellamy was dis- | missed with the total at 150, and then | Shand and K. E. J, Menzies settled I down tc put Ihe result beyond doubt. I They added 132 runs for the fifth wicket in even time, and Shand was not , out until only 15 runs were required I for a win. He had played a most valuable innings, worrying his way j through a difficult patch on Monday afternoon and moving along quietly I but steadily to-day. Menzies was ( more aggressive, being a naturally i more powerful hitter, and he was nor i out with 80 at the close of play. ' Both ' he and Shand were allowed a “life" i or two but they played excellent | cricket and seldom appeared to be in I any real difficulty.
