WANGANUI CRICKET
MATCH WITH SIR JULIEN CAHN’S TEAM v STRONG HOME ELEVEN. Now that the Hawke Cup elimination match with Wairarapa is over, the next star attraction on the Wanganui cricket horizon is the game against Sir Julien Cahn's eleven on Saturday, February 18. Comprised of players of the calibre of Hardstaff, and Dempster, the English team is a brilliant combination, and sparkling cricket is assured.
The Wanganui representatives should provide strong opposition to the visitors, as they hold an unbeaten record this season, having won four matches and drawn one. Special practices are being held for prospective players, every night this week, and the regular club matches are producing a bright airay of talent. Among the players assured of a place in the Wajiganui side, must be R. I. Sewell, D. G. Barton, H. Cuming, A. G. Davidson, R. Thomas, M. Guy, L. Connor and G. A. McDougal. Outstanding among the bowling the possibles are H. Guthrie, the slow lefthander, who has been trundling with great success in club games recently, and J. Oliver, medium pace, who has also registered some fine performances.
After his fine innings against Wairarapa, Thomas must be considered as an opening bat, and it is pleasing to note that his fielding !s now of a high standard.
G. Hook will be lucky to secure a place in the team, as his performances this season have lacked consistency and been disappointing. Although he has been picked for all representative matches to date, he has not yet been available. Is Hook losing his cricket "bug”?
A dashing batsman and fine field, L. Kauter, is assured of a place. He gave a particularly brilliant exhibition against Wairarapa, when he scored a whirlwind 57.
B. Dow, if he is fit, is the probable wicket-keeper. Although Marshall served ably in the Hawke Cup match, the Marist player is generally considered the best in Wanganui.
A good all-round combination would be: Cuming, Sewell, Thomas, Davidson, Dow. Barton, Kauter, Connor, Guthrie, or Anderson. McDougal and Guy. However, the final selection could rest in no more capable hands than those of the sole-selector, Mr. E. C. Gee. to whom Wanganui owes much of its success this season.
WANGANUI ASSOCIATION FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY A further series of matches in the Wanganui Cricket Association's senior grade competition will be opened and I the junior competition advanced an- ! other stage on Saturday, when the i fixtures will be as follows: Senior. Technical College v Technical Old Boys, Cook's Gardens No. 2. Marist v. United, Cook's Gardens No. 1. Junior. Marist B v. Wanganui, Victoria Park No. 1. Garrison Band v. United, Victoria Park No. 2. Aramoho v. Marist A, Victoria Park No. 3. T. 0.8. a bye. Advice has been received from the Collegiate School, that their team will not be available on Saturday. So Wanganui win by default.
