ON HAWERA TRACKS
THE FINAL GALLOPS YESTERDAY’S OPERATIONS HAWERA, Feb. 7. Some useful sprinting was accomplished at Hawera this morning and the presence of several visiting horses added interest to the work. The plough provided hard and last going. Te Huia (Ryan) reeled oft half a mile in 50sec. He appears benefited by his outing in the Cup at Opunake and if started in hack company at the Egmont meeting he should more than pay his way. Fiancee (Edgecombe) occupied 50Isec. over the same ground.
All Bunsby (Chote) completed two rounds of pacework by sprinting three furlongs in 39sec. He did not hit out very treaty in the hard going. Chief Lord (Ryan) traversed half a mile on the trial grass in 52sec. Le Marquis (Grylls) held the measure of Resinguard (Fryer) at the close of half a mile in 51isec. Although he did not start at Opunake there is nothing amiss with Le Marquis, and the speedy Lord Quex gelding should give a good account of himself in the Trial Handicap on Thursday.
Dark Eagle (Prisk) held the measure of Lickem (Cole) over the concluding stages of six furlongs to record 1.17—a smart effort. Dark Eagle is in first-rate order, but Lickem did not hit out with his usual freedom.
Eastern Heir (Sargent) and Panthiest (Maria) were companions over half a mile in 51sec. The former looks none the worse for recent racing and he is a hack well above the average. Triune (Sargent) and Airam (Maria) encompassed a round al three-quarter pace. Triune was lame after the Thames meeting last month, but he appears quite sound again The two-year-olds Algerian (Prisk) and Kilometre (Edwards) got to the end of half a mile in 52sec. Ramleh (Chaplin) and Race Call (Farland) traversed live furlongs in 1.41. Both members of L. George s stable are in capital order. Auckland Contingent. Time was when Auckland stables were widely represented at race meetings conducted by the Egmont Racing Club at .Hawera, writes the Auckland correspondent of the "Chronicle." Of late years this representation has dwindled considerably with the heavy increase in transport charges and the increase in stake money al the northern race fixtures. However, a team of three will be on hand at Hawera for the racing this week and the trio have rosy prospects ot winning before they return home. Owner-trainer W. 11. Maria, who specialises in Australian-bred horses went on to Hawera alter stopping al Thames following the meeting there He took with him the three-year-old Eastern Heir, the hurdler Airam and the two-year-old Pantheist. The lastnamed is to run in the handicap races for two and 1 hree-year-olds Her best performance to date was tc finish second to Tableau at Ellerslie in the spring and her effort was certainly encouraging, lor she was slow away and then came hoTne very strongly. Back to that form she would be a good place proposition at Hawera now that win-and-place belting is back again there. Airam is oniy a four-year-old and her erratic behaviour at the barrier last season caused her to be placed on lhe schooling list. Hence her debut al New Plymouth on Boxing Day as a hurdler. In her few outings she has shown that she will make good, although to date she has not become perfect in her jumping. However, in her six outings to date she has won once and been placed four times, so that with improvement in fencing she should soon be able to take on the best. Airam should go well at Hawera. Eastern Heir wen the Hack Cup contest at Stratford five weeks ago and he finished second at Thames and again at Ellerslie. Both events were over middle distances, so lie has some credentials as a stayer. He is in the eight and a-half furlongs hack race on the opening day anu in the Nolan Hack Cup on Saturday, and his form indicates that he is a possioiiity in cither of these events. When beaten into second place in his last two runs it was by a head by Towii Section and a nose by Gay Rebel. The
value of this form can best be gained bv the fact that two days later at Ellerslie Gay Rebel was heavily supported to win the Ralph Handicap, interference ruining his chance. In Eastern Heir and Airam Mr. Maria has two possible winners on the Hawera trip. Riding Engagements Riding engagements announced for. to-morrow at Hawera are as follow: S. T.
