VERDICT OF NOT GUILTY
GRAVE CHARGE AGAINST WOMAN COURT CLEARED DURING PROCEEDINGS [Per Press Association.l WELLINGTON, Feb. 6. After a retirement of an hour and ten minutes, a jury in the Supreme Court at Wellington to-day decided there was an element of doubt and returned a verdict of not guilty in the case in which Mary Wearne, aged 57, married, was charged with unlawfully using an instrument with intent to procure a miscarriage. Accused pleaded not guilty. Mr. Justice Blair presided. The Crown case was conducted by the Crown Prosecutor, Mr. W. H. Cunningham, and accused was represented by Mr. J. A. Scott. The Judge made an oraer clearing the Court during the hearing of evidence and also prohibited the publication of the name of principal Crown witness, who was 17 years of age on December 26. The offence was alleged to have been committed last month. Points made by counsel for the accused were that the principal witness was an accomplice if what she asid was true and the evidence of an accomplice must be construed with a certain degree of suspicion.
