BOXING IN U.S.A.
NEW LIGHT-WEIGHT CHAMPION TONY GALENTO IN HEAVY CLASS NEW YORK, Feb. 5. By technically knocking out “Tiger" Jack Fox in the ninth round Melio Bettina, a farm boy from Beacon, won New York State recognition as world light-heavyweight champion. In a bout at Detroit Tony Galento (16.12) knocked out Natie Brown in the fourth round and is now nearer to meeting Joe Louis. WAS THE BOUT “FIXED”? SET-BACK FOR TONY GALENTO. DETROIT, Feb. 5. “Two Ton” Tony Galento’s prospects of a meeting with Joe Louis have suffered a set-back through the Michigan Boxing Commission questioning the honesty of his defeat of Natie Brown last Friday, The Commission suspended Galento and banned Brown for life.
Critics consider Galento merely a second rate but picturesque lighter being ballyhooed into prominence. Nevertheless, he is the National Boxing Association’s choice as the first contender for the heavyweight title.
