SEX AND CRIME
BACK-DATED MAGAZINES IMPORT PROHIBITED WELCOMED BY BOOKSELLERS "Members of the New Zealand Booksellers and Stationers’ Association have been endeavouring for years to secure the prohibition of the importation of cheap magazines dealing wjth sex and crime.” said Mr. H. Rowell, president of the Wanganui Association, to a "Chronicle" reporter yesterday. "The prohibition of this type of literature under the import control legislation will not affect the business of members of the association who do not handle this type of magazine.” Mr. Rowell said that the cheap sex and crime literature consisted usually of back numbers which were unsold on the market in the slums of New York and Chicago. The object of the New Zealand Booksellers and Stationers’ Association was to sell only high class literature and the restrictions recently imposed would not mean any loss in business.
