THE GREAT CRISIS

“FOUR DAYS IN SEPTEMBER” NEVI BOOKS AT LIBRARY. Four fateful days in September, 1938, are covered by Lord Killanin in one of the latest books received at the Wanganui Public Library. The writer, entitling his book “Four Days," covers the crisis of September 25 to September 29 as the days passed, minute by minute, in London, Rome, Paris, Prague and Washington. This is a documentary record of a world event of the first magnitude, assembled by leading journalists who have written quite independently of one another. The contributions have not been edited or trimmed in any way, each is exactly as expressed by its distinguished author. The result is a picture of extraordinary brilliance and value. “Hawaii: Isles of Enchantment," by Clifford Gessler, a newspaper man with intimate acquaintance with Hawaii, is a pageantry of this intoxicating land. The flowing prose of an accomplished author and beautiful drawings of a famous artist, Mr. E. H. Suydam, make a. book of unusual

charm and appeal. “The Fascist: His State and His Mind,” by E. B. Ashton, has been reviewed as the most penetrating analysis of the subject yet produced. The author points out at the start that the term “Fascism" is more frequently employed as a term of abuse for a political opponent, than as a description of a political philosophy. Mr. Ashton gives a careful study of the Fascist state in clear and logical terms. His book will appeal to every reader who is seriously interested in world politics of to-day. The new books added during the week ending February 3 are as follow: Fiction.—“ John" (Irene Baird, “Trail of the Split Hoof" (R. A. Bennett), “Here’s to Romance" (Carol Gaye), “The Homesteaders" (H. Pendexter), “Proceed with Caution" (J. Rhode). “The Elephant Never Forgets" (E. L. White), “Miss Bun, the Baker’s Daughter" (D. E. Stevenson), “Youth Comes to Kenya" (N- K. Strange), “Free Land" (Rose W Lane), “These were the Young" (Mary Nicholson), “Sarah’s Youth” (E. O. Somerville- and Martin Ross). Non-Fiction. —“Winifred Holtby as 1 Knew Her” (Evelyn White), “The White Coated Army” (James Harpole), “Ski-ing from A—Z" (Dr. W. Amstutz), “Four Days, 25-29 Sept., 1938" (edited by Michael, Lord Killanin), “When We Are Married” (J. B. Priestley), “Ci vitas Dei, the Commonwealth of God” (Lionel Curtis), “Hawaii, Isles of Enchantment” (Clifford Gessler), “A Story of Water" (A. Pigman), “Paths of Happiness” (Lord Mottistone), “The Fascist, His Stat-, and His Mind" (E. B. Ashton).
