CROQUET

PALMERSTON NORTH GREENS VISITORS IMPRESSED BOOST FOR CENTENNIAL YEAR Chatting with The Times about the Dominion croquet tournament on the eve of its conclusion, Mr. R. W. McCreath, of Gore, Dominion president of the Croquet Council, said he had been greatly impressed with the nice lawns provided. In fact, he went so far as to say they were as good as any he had experienced. Answering a comment about the prominence of a number of the southern players, Mr. McCreath said he felt justly proud of this little group, who had shown a high standard of deportment and demonstrated the finer points of the game. Mr. McCreath said he would like to see more youthful players represented at the Dominion fixtures, as it was only in such fixtures could they improve their standard and take back their added knowledge to permeate throughout the various associations. It was particularly helpful for the more isolated places to send out theii’ ambassadors to the big fixtures.

Croquet would definitely receive a great boost in the coming year, Mr. McCreath went on to say, and in preparation for the Centennial fixtures and visitors the clubs would be busy in every part of New Zealand. Manawatu already knew what would be expected and the president said he had laid it down that croquet players throughout the Dominion were to set themselves out to ensure that visiting players would take away happy memories of New Zealand croquet and of the friendliness of its exponents. It was expected that funds would be forthcoming to assist in the entertainment, but associations with initiative would start early to raise sums for this purpose. WANGANUI CLUB COMPETITION EVENTS.
