NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “Early Bird”) The weather was delightful for local training operations on Saturday morning, and the conditions were almost, ideal, the number one grass track being in tip top order. There was an interesting lot of gallops, without any particularly fast times being put up, most of the work being of a useful nature. The half brother by California to Civility sprinted two furlongs a couple of times, the first time in 26 2-5. He will probably make his first public appearance in the Autumn. Mask and Lysander went a mile at a strong three-quarlei pace, both being anxious to increase the pace. They are both better than ever. Elysianor (J. Head) galloped five furlongs, running the first two in 24 1-5, the three in 37, and the full dis ance in 1.4 3 5. Deluge, conceding good weight to The Thorn, was too good for him at the ••nd of half a mile. He ran the first quarter in 24 1-5 and the four furlongs in 49. 4-5. Great Day (D. C. Watts) jumped off at the five furlongs post, cutting out the first two furlongs in a modest 26, the three in 38. and the five in 1-5 4-5. Royal Elm (J. McDonald) was giving Break o’ Day netarly three lengths start in a sprint home over three furlongs. and he finished alongside of him in 37 3-5.

Star Area, who looks well, was sent a round and a half without going for time.

A couple of two-year olds. Thaw (W. Rayner, and Paieta (D. C. Watts), were to go three furlongs together, but the former was so slow in getting off the mark that Paleta was running by himself, the colt doing th* journey in 37 3-5. Thaw shaped badly. Civility ran seven furlongs, the first three in 37 3-5, four furlongs 50 3-5, and the six 1.17 3-5 without being hurried. Diamond Ring (J. McDonald) galloped five furlongs alone, and after doing the first two in 25 2-5 and the three in 37 4-5, she finished fairlv well in 1.6 15. An interesting piece of schooling work was witnessed when Empire Camp (P. McGuire) and Halgina (W. D. Young) were associated in a bout over half a dozen hurdles. The latter was always doing it best, and whereas he jumped cleanly throughout Empire amp was slovenly andJcnocked every hurdle but the last very hard. After breakfast Alloway (Knapp) was sent six furlongs the reverse way. running the initial two furlongs in 25 4-5. half mile in 50 1-5. and the final quarter in 26 1-5. making 1.16 2-5 for the six. Tamakana and Alarm were sent a mile together, but they were not out for time. Whenuanui (J. Barry) ran a smart five furlongs, leaving the first two behind in 24 3-5, three furlongs in 36 2-5, and the five in 1.3. It has been decided that Civility will go to thp JlanawHtu fixture in preference to thp Auckland meeting, and no doubt the decision will prove a wise one. Weights for the first day of the Marton meeting are due on Friday next. Acceptances are due to-day week. The Dargaviile meeting is to be held on Thursday land Saturday, after which there will be no racing until December 28, when there are to be no less than half a dozen meetings in progress, exclusive of trotting. Auckland acceptances and payments for the classics Urc due on Friday. The acceptances for the Manawatu fixture will close to-morrow.

Mr H. li. Peacock has selected the name of Sylvan Dell for the coming two-ycar-old half-sister by Lord Quex to Wassail and Plain Sailing. She is running out on the property of Mr F. Donnelly, Huvelock North, and is developing into a sturdy youngster. Front Rank and Plain Sailing, who have recently been showing first class form, are by Warplane. Given the right chances this young horse would make a big name for himself as a sire. Licinius and the two-year-old Talisker are booked for Ellerslie at Christmas time. Talisker has improved in appearance very considerably since last seen out and the way he galloped the reverse way at Woodville was very impressive. Even if he fails amongst the • racks at Ellerslie he should win one of the handicaps.

Battlement ’s rorm in the Teschemaker Handicap at Timaru on Friday was very disappointing. He never appeared to be able to get going, and finished at the rear of the field. Rapier was responsible for an attractive performance in this race. He lost his position going out of the straight, and was giving the leaders a big start going along the back. Considering the race was run at such a fast clip, his performance was full of merit, and augurs well for future successes over a distance.

At present Mr R. A. McKenzie is undecided about his two mares, Piuthair and Clarinda, but it is probable that both will run in the Auckland Cup.

It is understood that T. Green is to ride Piuthair. but a rider has yet to be obtained for Clarinda. All this is indefinite, however, and one may run at Jwapuni. It is definite that the Auckland Cup candidate will be ridden by T. Green, whether it be Piuthair or Clarinda. The work on the New Plymouth track on Saturday morning took place on the plough afid the trial grass, both of which were in good order. E. George, P. Johnson, A. Shearsby and D. Moraghan worked their teams before breakfast. Anoio and a companion took 1 min. 6sec for five furlongs. Quillfire and No Response were allotted useful work. Oread Js and Advance Camp went five furlongs in Imin. 4 2-ssec. Te Mana and Fire Brigade took Imin. Bsec for the same distance. Vivo, Papaponga and The Swell went half a mile. This tale of one of the best worst racing dreams on record comes from Coogee. A resident of that suburb whose hobbies include mild punting, was informed by his son last week that he had dreamt Clumsy won a race at Moorefield by 16 lengths. The dream was very clear, and certainly the winning margin promised no great anxiety. So “Dad.’* when he hied himself to Moorefield, had a little on Clumsy at long odds in the Flying. Clumsy finished last. This was admittedly disconcerting, but when Clumsy was produced again two races later, and backed down to 6 to 1, “Dad” saw the light at once. This must be the race the dream referred to, and he backed up. But Clumsy ran last again. Now in that Coogee household the subject of racing dreams has been firmly dropped as a topic of conversation. As expected the Woodville Meeting produced some stylish two-year-olds, all from F. Davis’ stable, writes “Vedette.’’ The Absurd-Desert Gold filly, Auratum, is smart and very attractive. but she was eclipsed by the King John-First Blow gelding, Gascony. Both these youngsters may have appeared big. but they were big and well and in great order for the season. It is safe to assume that they will be better horses in a fortnight’s time. Both are in the Foal Stakes at Ellerslie, and as Gascony seems the better he should be a worthy opponent of Cimabue, who is reported to be breaking records at Napier Park. Doree, the Lucullus-d’Oro filly, may not be as good as the other pair, but she is more than useful. Davis also has Magna Charta and Oreum in great buck)?. Magna Charta has furnished into a magnificent three-year-old, and although he is not an easy horse to manage and essentially a man's mount, he should win good races. If Davis does not vrin big money for Mr T. H. Lowry this year, it will be very surprising. The Australian bred Grey Monk filly. Silver Grey, shows no speed at all at present. Weather conditions fine and the track the fastest it has been this season were the favourable circumstances afforded early workers on the Hawera course on .Saturday and several owners were out to see their horses in action. J. Fryer opened proceedings by giving Rchutai, Gold Collector and Paitonu strong work. C. Jackson sent Shuteye and Taikawhana over five furlongs, Glengariff joining in at the three furlongs post. Shuteye finished in front of his stable mate in 1.4. M. Conway’s youngsters, Iciogne and War Flame, ran half a mile in 514 sec about their best to date. Gaillard and Silvermine were trotted on the inside grass. Tip Tree and Airtight went four furlongs in 514 sec. The two-year-old Gasbag youngster, Silent, and Royal Acre, both in R. Brough’s care, ran a good half mile in sO4sec. Royal Acre having a little the best of the gallop. Benzora and Lethal finished together after traversing five furlongs in 1.3. Lethal finished in good shape. Eka and Lady Anstruther did three-quarter pace work. These two will lack nothing in racing condition by Christmas time. Bonogne strode over a half-mile in 51|sec.

Euphonium and Enare, after cantering once round, rattled off four furlongs in 50Jsec. The Lamb went six furlongs, being joined by Orazone at the three furlung peg. The Lamb ran his six in 1.174. San Fera and Grand Lupin ran four furlongs in 52sec. G. Richard’s Bisogne youngster and Myzone (this name has been disallowed) ran four furlongs in 51 l-ssec. Barryander and Acred went four furlongs in 1.4. Lady Cavendish, by herself, went five furlongs in 1.2 1-s—the best of the morning’s work. Gold Rangi ran the last three of his work in 38sec. Blue Peter strode nicely over six furlongs in 1.21. The jumpers. Subjection And Euchre, took six hurdles, Subjection showing to advantage. A good schooling bout was accomplished by Lady Estelle and Take Take, the latter being ridden by the veteran Charley Cochrane. Reremoana, who has been on the easy list for a day or two, was exercised on the inside. Skypoint ran over five furlongs by himself in 1.3 1-5. Bevis has been eased in his work, a gathering in the foot being the trouble though he is not expected to be idle for long. Tommy Tito was out riding work on Saturday for the first time since his accident. Tommy will be in demand at Christmas time. R. J. Flowers has definitely settled in Hawera again, and was out riding work also. Seatown is looking in great heart and in view of the Auckland trip has been working the reverse way round. On Thursday morning he ran out seven furlongs in 1.31, finishing strongly.
