PIGEON FLYING
SATURDAY’S EVENTS NO BIRDS BACK FROM DUNEDIN Tho Wanganui Pigeon Flying Club held a race from Whangarei on Saturday, December 4, the birds being liberated by tho stationmaster at 7 a.in. in clear weather. Mr E. J. Douglas secured first and second positions, his birds doing the distance (294 miles) in I Bhr. 31min. Tho first four positions, with tho velocity per minute attained, were as follows: 1— Mr Douglas, 1013.15 yd. 2 Mr Douglas, 1012.49 yd. 3 Mr Edmonds, ]oll.Byd. 4 Mr Beard, 1009 yd. The club also held a sweepstake race on Saturday, December 11, from Frankton Junction, the stationmaster liberating the birds in fine weather. Mr J. Dow’s bird registered tho greatest velocity, 1110 yards a minute. Tho results for the various pools were as follows: Two-shilling sweepstake: Mr Dow, 1110 yd 1, Mr Edmonds, 1306 yd 2. Shilling sweepstake: Mr Hylton 3085 yd. 1, Mr Kench, 940 yd. 2. Sixpenny sweepstake; Mr Gainey, 1096 yd. 1, Mr McDonald, 1080 yd. 2. The club also held a race from Dunedin, but up to the time of going to press no birds had arrived home. The club will be hampering on Thursday evening for the Whangarei old-bird interval race and a sweepstake race from Wellington.
