SCHOOL ATHLETICS
A BRILLIANT DEMONSTRATION POTENTIAL CHAMPIONS COMPETE FINE DISPLAY BY BUGLE BANDS i The schools’ athletic and band demonstration which was held on Cook’s Gardens can be described as a brilliant success from every point of view. The organisation was a feather in the cap ’of the secretary, Mr H. AfcFeely. So smoothly did the programme run that ; day events, for which the entries numbered 1200, were concluded 15 minutes ahead of time. The racing revealed some promising performances. The display of Miss J. Greager marked her out as a young lady who will uphold the honour of Wanganui on the athletic track. Some Very fine runners were also seen in the boys’ events. Lancaster, Waters and Somerville were neck and neck all day, and finished very close in the championship events. In the evening a bands’ demonstration w r as given, and there was a good (attendance of the public. The demonstration was preceded by a parade from the Town Bridge to Guyton Street, and into Cook’s Gardens. The bands marshalled under Mr E. C. Jannings, and marched up the Avenue at intervals The demonstration concluded with a massed band demonstration, which was a very fitting finale to a fine day.
