MAGISTRATE’S COURT (From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent). At the Alarton Court yesterday before Messrs F. R. H. Brice, J.P., and R. E. Beckett, J.P., Edward Aforau was charged with, allowing stock to wander on the public road. He was convicted and discharged. | A first offender wtis convicted and fined 5s for being drunk. Joseph Alason was charged with riding a motor cycle in a manner dangerous to the public, and with riding a motor-cycle without a muffler, contrary to the by-laws. Air K. A. Williams defended Alason, who pleaded not guilty. H. J. Fowler, traffic inspector for the Rangitikei County', gave evidence statj ing that he saw defendant riding his motor cycle in Wellington. Road in a manner which he considered dangerous. He estimated the speed at 50 riiles un : hour or more. C. W. Preece, a motor mechanic, stated that he saw defendant going down Wellington Road on his motor cycle tand considered he was I travelling at 45 miles an hour. There was very little traffic on the streets at th? ime. Afason was fined £5 and Court costs on the first charge. On the charge of riding without a muffler he i w;c. convicted and uischarged. ; Judgment by default was given in ;Ihe following civil cases: G. F. Walls v. i Bert Alarshall, claim £6 12s, costs 30s i 6d; Low and Gregory v. A. C. Potts, I 30s 6d; G. R. Robinson v. E. Moran, £4 i Ss, costs 24s 6d; Hallenstein Bros. v. E. Bulls is to be played on Wednesday, the box plan being at Edwards, stationers. GENERAL NEWS. At the Alarton Ladies’ Welfare League euchre party on Thursday evening Miss O. Neumann won the ladies’ prize and Air. A. Strawbridge the men’s prize. The function was held in the Tipperary Rooms, and in aid of Marton District High School funds. Mr. A. .Smart presided over a meeting of the Alarton Cycle Club on Thursday evening. The second race of the series (15 miles) for Mr. W. McKinnon’s bicycle as a points prize, will take place next Weflnesday, three times round the Crofton Block and two laps in the Marton Park. There will also a youth’s two miles cycle race and .100 yards open flat race. Afr. L. G. Aforris has donated a gold medal for the fastest time in the road race. REAfABKABLE ESCAPE. A remarkable escape from electrocution occurred in the vicinity of the Wanganui-Rangitikei Electric Power Board 7 s sub-station on Tutaenui Road, Marton on Thursday afternoon as a result of which two linesmen. W. A. Voice and H. S. Roulston, received severe burns, and a two-year-old boy named Fowler, son of Air. and Mrs. H. J. Fowler, was also badly injured, his clothing I being burned, also his leg and thigh, Voice and Roulston,. and another linesman, N. G. Brooke, were engaged runl ning out a low tension wire when it caught in the Overhanging branch of a tree, with the result that it swung up into contact with a 6600-volt high tension line overhead. Voice and Roulston were rendered unconscious. Brooke : went to their assistance and conveyed ' them to Dr. Dick’s surgery, where it ■ was found that they had sustained severe burns, Roulston being the greatest ’ sufferer. i Tt is surmised that the boy Fowler, who had been playing outside the house • opposite the sub-station came into cou- : tact with the wire when it fell from the • pole.

ST. STEPHEN’S CHURCH DAY SCHOOL. EXHIBITION OF WORK. At the Marton Town Hall yesterday afternoon the pupils of St. Stephen’s Church Day School annual exhibition of school work and a geographical tableau was well patronised. A novel feature of the entertainment was the map of Europe by the puipls, each of whom appeared as representing a country of Europe, which was pinned on to a screen on.the stage, eventually forming Europe. They rendered national songs and dances.
