WAS IT FAKED? CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHT MORNING MILK BLAMED NEW YORK. Dec. 1. ■ Magazine writers are fighting the Dempsey-Tunney battle all over again. I “Was the big fight a fake?’’ is the I headline of a feature story in the cur- | rent ‘ ‘ Liberty, ’ ’ by Sydney Sutherland. | Charlie Mabbutt, the generalissimo 'around Dempsey’s camp, has declared that tho ex-champion was poisoned ‘ from milk left on the verandah in the I mornings. Mabbutt was ill for several ! weeks after the fight, attacked by the same rash which afflicted the former champion. Mr. Sutherland also charges Dempsey with having agreed to lie down before Tunney, but says that gamblers who had backed Tunney heavily also slow-poisoned Dempsey to make certain that he would keep to the agreement. “Perfect nonsense,” declared Mr. Tex Rickard, when shown this and similar charges which are stirring New York. Dempsey himself said: “I was beaten by a better man. That’s all about it.” > PURDY AND TROWERN PRELIMINARY TO CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH AT OPERA HOUSE The Manawatu Boxing Association has been very fortunate in securing the match for the lightweight boxing championship of New Zealand between Charles Purdy and Reg. Trowern, two of the cleverest boys in their weight 'in the Dominion to-day. As a prei liminary to the big match, there is sure ■ to be a great attendance at the match ; between Purdy and Trowern at the j Wanganui Opera House next Monday night. Purdy needs no introduction to Wanganui audiences after his fine performance against Jamito, a month ago. Trowern, on the other hand, ha.s not yet been seen in Wanganui. He is very pugnacious and takes the fight to his opponent all the time. The two boxers arc very worthy opponents and a great display should be witnessed.
