OBITUARY.

Another of the inland pioneers has been called hence; the settlers of the interior will miss an old friend. Ihe teito G. F. Manson was a native or Orkney, and was bom in 1829. He went to Australia in 1851, and was on tho first goldtield that was opened m New South Wales. After eleven years experience <and plenty of hard work, he came to Otagb in 1862, and was in tho employ of Whittingham Brothers, of Melbourne and Otago, for 2£ years, until ho took tho West Coast gold fever. He came over here to see his brother in 1865, and shortly after started business in Patea. He joined tho Patea Light Horse, and saw someactive service during the war. He did well there, but the reports from the Thames goldfields were so good that ne sold out, and lost all at that place. He cama back here and joined his brother, Mr. S. H. Manson, in 1870. Soon afterwards he opened a store at Kanoi, which was then a wilderness, having no roads and little settlement for years after that. All the goods had to be packed from Wanganui through bush and mud. He bought some land at Chakuno iabout twelvo years ago, and started business there, which was continued until about eighteen months a<*o, when failing health compelled him to come in+6 Wanganui. The late Mr Manson was of a kindly disposition, and his death will be regretted by a 'large circle of friends. A widow and three sons and five daughters are left to mourn their loss To them and the ether sorrowing relatives we tender our syirpathy.
