PEOPLE'S DAY.

People's Day broke fine, and from an early hour crowds streamed towards the ground. The takings. on Thurscday amounted to £324 17s. 6d. The sum of £265 was taken at the gates, £38 7s. 6d at the grandstand, and £21 9s. at the 2s. stand. To-day the record will bo again broken, for at 2 o'clock the great ground literally teemed with moving humanity, while every stand was packed. The Press gallery this year is" a'record, between 26 and 30 reporters assembling for the occasion. Everything possible was done by the Association to facilitate the work of the pressmen, and they, in turn, were not slow to express their appreciation. At 11.30 Mr. Maurice Cohen, the President, and Mr. J. C. Lane, the seci'etary, were invited to step into the Press room, and were then officially presented with an appreciative testimonial. The presentation., was made by Mr. Tom L. -Mills, of.-the ''Evening Post," who reterrecl particularly to the invariable .courtesy and attention which the secretary'extended to the knights of the ..pencil. Messrs. Cohen and Lane suitably' acknowledged the kindly senti.men^s expressed by Mr. Mills oh behalf ■<ot tho Press representatives. ~.. Inadditipn to ; awards already sent, tho following championships were awarded :—English Leicester ram : Slack Bros.;. ewe, Perry -Bros. Southdowns in wool,, J. Stuckay,. ram, and ewe; Southdowns, shorn, ram, Mrs. H. B. .Slack; ewe, J. Knight. Points prize in draughts fell to F. A. Bremeiv of- Normanby (Taranaki), with 4i points. Gamman and Co. (Palmerston) second, with 35; Cottrell and Co. (Wellington) were sixth with 8 points. Baldwin and Rayward's special prize for most meritorious inventions relating to agricultural implements or machery was awarded to an improvement of plough wheels, Barraud and Abrahams taking the prize as agents. Thd grand parade was witnessed by a great crowd, estimated at anything between twenty-five and thirty thousand people. Tho parade itself was highly creditable to both Association and exhibitors, anjl was one of the best demonstrations of live stock and horses over seen in the colony. Tho first competition to-day was the pony leaping, which was won by Tamaiti Potaka's grey Rata, K. Hankin's Kaipu second, A. E. Clone's Messenger Boy third. Mrs'! F. S. Mcßae was adjudged the best lady driver, Miss A. G. Robertson tho second, and Miss A. E. Hankins third.
it was not surprising, after her brilliant performance of the previous day, that Miss J. Campbell should obtain tho judge's verdict as the best lady rider, Miss L. C. Moore and Miss Reynold tying for second honours. . Tha Hunters' Competition was the most interesting event in the programme. Twenty-six horses went to the post. As a whole, the jumping waa very good, and in some instances of an exceptionally high order. After tho first round five competitors were selected to -"t"y again"—Noake's Mignon, W J. Bartlett's Utah, J. H. McNiven's Pickpocket, W. D. Watson's Yeast, and H -T. Cameron's Senorita. Of tbase, riekpockat. Mignon, and Yeast had gained tho same marks. The second time Yeast's was adjudged the best performance, Pickpocket being placed second, Mignon third For the jumping and leaping competition, in teams from Mounted Rifle Corps, teams were entered by the Pahiatua Mounted Rifles (2), Alexandria Mounted Rifles (1), Palmerston North Mounted Rifles (1), Feilding Mounted Rifles (3), Hawke's Bay Mounted Rifles (1), and East Coast Mounted Rifles (1). The last-mentioned and on 3of the Feilding squads were scratched. Tho final verdict, after an interesting competition, placed Feilding
first, Palmerston second, and Alexandria (Wanganui) third.
