THE POTATO MARKET.
Per Press Association
WELLINGTON, November 2. To-day's prices for potatoes in Wellington are: —New Zealand, new round, 20s per owt., kidneys, 245; Sydney kidneys, 20s to 235. In ttibe icouirse of an interview to-day ■Mr Haybittle, a leading. produce salesman, said tlhe question of duty has he&n raised in tftie House lately ■without much result, and in 'tdiis 'Connection I would like to point out <a curious anomoly. The duty levied is at the rate of 20 per cent, ad valorem, and I comtend that if it is meant to be in tlhe interests of New Zealand farmers it misses its object, for while potatoes are plentiful in New Zealand prices are low enough to prevent outside oom'petiitlion ©yen df unprotected by tariff charge. It is only when scarcity exists and tihey are practically-un-obt/ainalble locally tihiat it is necessary to impoi-t, and it is -then «t(hfewb th©.consumer feels the pindh, foo- the maitiurally higher iiivoi>ce prio© 'becomes duty, and the result is tHi'at tlhe New Zealand farmer is not prdtetltied, for lie postsesses no supplies and the public are penalised.
