IMPOUNDING LAWS.

To the Editor. Sir, —Wi'l you please let me know through the columns of the "Chronicle'" if a poundkeeper is legally right in selling by auction any animal, after the- . expiration of the time required, when? such animal has been advertised, providing the animal is not kept in thepound, and no notice, has been kept on> the pound, until the time for disposal: of such animal. Also may he sell without an order from a J.P. I ask because such a sale took place to-day,, when a well-bred chestnut hack, mare,, with white points and white blaze on, face, was disposed of. A notice, I ant informed, was placed on the pountt when the horse was impounded, but" snch notice has not been posted therefor some time, and I think that an. owner, if he should examine a pound, on seeing neither horse nor notice,, would conclude the horse was not im—, pounded there. Trusting you will, oblige.—l am, etc., " '■ GEO. HENDERSON^ [Ffc is the duty of the poundkeeper- ~ directly the animal is impounded (aY to enter particulars into the "pound book," which is open to the inspection* '• of the owner of the stock frea of charge; (b) to affix to the pound at once particulars of the stock impounded ; (c) to send fourteen days' noticeto the owner of the stock (if known),. *'<■ and to advertise notice in .at teast one- , , newspaper. The animals are"to be soleC" ah the first "pound sale" after the expiration of the fourteen days' notice required by the Act. The animal must, bo kept in the pound itself, unless 'the* povnd be too small to conveniently hold the animals impounded. If thd;-' poundkeeper has failed to comply witht these provisions h>3 is liable to a fine.. An oi-der from a J.P. is only necessary where it is wished to at once dispose* * of valueless animals, which are" not of si fficient value to defray expenses, *ir tha full period required by the Act i3aliowed to elapse.—Ed.....'•Qhjronicle."}
