WANGANUI CHRISTMAS CARNIVAL.

SAILING RACE

£50 IN PRIZE MONEY

Tha meeting of the committee of the Wanganui Sailing Club called for last evening was well attended, there being present Messrs. C. E. Mackay (Commodore), C. F. Day, G. Ambrose, F Crane, A. R. Moore, D. E. Hutton, F. Loftus, P. Lewis, and B. O. Hodgson. DINGEY RACE—A letter was received from the Thorndon (Dingey) Sailing Club, asking if there would be an event on the Carnival programme in which any of their boats could en ter. The class of boats referred to are 10-footers (centre-board), with a beam of 5 foot, and carrying from 100 to 140 feet cf canvas. Resolved, that this class bo not eligible to enter for the big race, but that tho Carnival Committee be waited upon >and asked for a further donation of £10 to ' promte such a race. Tho^ Thorndon Club guaranteed* to send four boats. BIG CARNIVAL RACE PRIZE MONEY.—This subject caused a deal of discussion, and it was ultimately resolved that the prize money for the big race should bo £50, divided into:— First prize £35, second prize £10, third prize £5. In granting this amount the Committee are relying upon the generosity of tho public in assisting then-, .when called upon by the Canvassing Committee appointed to collect funds for tho big race. The Sailing Club have only received £25 from the Carnival Committee, and in adding £25 to the prize fund and paying all expenses in connection with the general booming of the affair all over the colony, they have done exceedingly well, and "deserve the support of the tradespeople and general public. Last year there were six visiting boats; this year, with such a big prize, there should be at least twice that number.

HANDICAPPING SYSTEM, CARNIVAL RACE.—This was indeed the question of the evening. Several schemes were suggested, but were all found impracticable. Resolved, that the-Arawa Sailing Club's handicapping rr.jca be adhered to.

TEMPORARY CLUB STOREHOUSE —Messrs. Mackay and Hodgson were appcintod a deputation to wait upon tho Harbour Board, with a view of obtaining a short lease of a shed recently occupied by Mr. Manson on the foreshore.

OPENING DAY—The Commodore H to open the season punctually at 2 o'clock on the 9th November, and after tho usual speeches, a procession will be lod by the champion boat (Clipper II.) of last year. In all probability there will bo a band in attendance. The club oxtsnd to all owners of launches and craft of any kind a hearty welcome to attend and participate in the opening festivities. At 2.30 a race for Mr. J. B. Murray's special prize, will bo started, ontriea for which will closo next Tuesday. Points will also count for the Studholme Challenge Cup. Wo understand that another addition to the Sailing Club's fleet .is to leave Auck'tahcl next Monday, and also that there is a 20-footer being built locally.
