. A Press wire says that Mr. J. F. Hartland, of Christchurch, was appointed secretary of the Auckland Racing Club at a special meeting of the committee held yesterday. He will take up his duties in time for the spring meeting. A pleasant little function took place at the Commercial Travellers' Olub on Saturday evening, when Mr George Franklin, who is about to be married, was presented by the members with a 'handsome hall stand. Mr 0. N. Firth, who hais been appointed to the managership of the Pialmerston branch of the West-port Coal Company, was also presented with a smoker's outfit ias a parting gift.
