By " Masque." The ooiicerts given on Thursday and Friday evenings by Miss Jessie Maclachlan were exta-emely enjoyable. . As a singer of the Auld Scots Sangs she is the best heard An Waaiganui for many a long day. The greatest loss the modern stage lias sustained occurred since my last notes appeared, Sir Henry Irving, that greatsouled a«toir, having passed away dramatically after appealing as Becket; His ashes have 'been given an honoured burying place, and none there be who will deny the fitness of the nation's act. MaoM<afacca's'dramatic company, headed 'by Miss Fitzmaurice Gill, Miss Hilda Meade and Mr Charles Blake have just completed a (highly successful season in 'Chnistohurch.
Maud Jeffries charges 2s 6d for her autograph, while Julius Knight's tariff is only a shilling. Mario «Majei-oni is with the Nance O Neil Company. George Majeroni is wifch the Tittel Brune Company. Aa*tihur Wontner, who played the Duke of Winterset in "Monsieur Beau-dau-e " during the Kaight-Jeffries season here, will not accompany the wga■nisatdon on their next visit. He concluded (his engagement with J. Q. Williamson in Melbourne. His wife, Miss Rose Pendemnis, who played secondary roles to Miss Jeffries, does not seem to have ibeen dn the cast lately. It is rumoured that Miss Nellie Stewart wiill shortly tmw South Africa at the head of George Musgirave's Comedy Company. Mr Pea-cy Graingei-, the Australian pianist, who was here with Miss Ada Grossley's concert company, gave a very suooessful promenade concert in London recently. During the .winter he will tour Denmark.
Tlie Lannceston papers ar© highly eoitthusiastiic over the return vieit of the Weetminsber Glee party, whioh is diwnng houses of 2000 in <t/h'e Tasmanian city. The boys are all new, while the adult singers have received the addition of a bass with the promising name of St&rndaJe Bennett.
Madame Maggie Stirling has been received with enthusiasm in Melbourne ■and Sydney. It is worth (recalling that whilst touring in Ayr last year, Mme. Stirling was by the Prince and Princess of Wales to sing for the League of the Empire Society, when the only other vocalists were the Earl of Shaftesbury and Lady Maud Wanrender. This
year the, contralto received a letter from Miss Charlotte Knollys, one of the secretaries to the-Queen, saying that her name hiad been on Her Majesty's list for some time, that the visit of the King of Spain and the recent Royal wedding had intervened, and that on Mme. Stirling's return from Australia the Queen would be pleased to hear her sing. "Comedy and Tragedy," which wall be done for the first time in Australia by the Knight-Jefflies' Company at the Melbourne Princess on the- 14th inst, is ia one-act play by W. S. Gilbert, and one of the best examples of that dramatist's work that has come from his pen. In London last year it was received with eclat. This play will be in the New Zealand repertoire.
