THE HARVESTER QUESTION.
Per Press Association
WELLINGTON, October 19. ..^-:, Th© Summer Council of the New Zealand Farmers' Union will open at the Canterbury Hall, Ohristohuroh, on November 8. As delegates will be present from all districts, it has been decided to arrange an interview witih the implement makers to dUcu&s matters at length. 'Probably a special evening session 'will be lield on one or more nights, so that the matter may receive the fullest -attention.
Mr. Seddon was interviewed this evening by a deputation of agricultural implement manufacturers. Mr. Peter Trolove presented a petition signed by nearly all the implement makers in New Zealand, asking the Government to introduce an Agricultural Implement Assistance Bill to preserve the present colonial trade against the operations of the American Harvester Company. The deputation produced schedule price lists of the articles the manufacturers wished to make reduc* tions on, in return for which reduction they asked the Government to impose a duty in the proportion of £4 to every £1 they deducted from the present retail price to farmers. As a further assurance to the farmers, they suggested that implements built in the "United Kingdom be kept on the free list as at present, and they did not ask for any interference with the importation of harvesting machinery, hay-making machinery, traction or oil engines, or dairy machinery.
The Premier promised to give full consideration to the request of the deputation.
