EDUCATION BOARD.

The regular meeting of the above was held yesterday. Present: Messrs. G S. Bridge (chairman), Atkinson, Eraser, Adams, Pirani, and Lethbridge. Mr. G. Carson was granted leave ot absence on account of illness. CASH STATEMENT.—GeneraI account, credit £1798 12s. 9d.; maintenance account, £819 17s. od. APPOINTMENTS.—Mataroa, Miss Ilygar, mistress; Apiti, Miss H. Buclanan, mistress. LEAVE OF ABSENCE.—Granted to Messrs. Griffiths, Trevena, Lynch, Slipper, Polling, and Miss Hill, to attend examinations; and Mr. Powell and Mr. Small on account of illness. The Chairman reported that the coat of insuring school residences would be £47 35., the estimate of the cost of instruction in nature study was £375, vhile the possible revenue was estimated at £368. It was decided to ask Mr. Lethbridge to report on the site of the Coal Creek school. . , The Chief Inspector reported against the establishment of a side school at the south-western end of the Borough at present, although there would be necessity for one in the future. Mr. Pirani reported in favour of selling a school site at present leased m Palmorston, and investing the money in a site to be selected in the south-western end of the borough.—lt was decided to inform the residents of the report ot the Inspector, and to ask the permission of the Minister to sell the land leased to Mr. J. 0. Batchelor by auction, and to invest the proceeds as recommended by Mr. Pirani. It was decided to inform all teachers that the new class books be not used mrfcil Ist July, 1906, and that next year's examinations will be held on the old class books. It was decided to invite fresh tenders for the erection of a new school at V/averley. On the Chairman's motion, it was ciocided that applications be invited foi a teacher of nature study at £300 a yoar and travelling expenses. The following pupil teachers were appointed:—College street, Miss G. Pitts; Taihape, Misses V. Honeyfiekl and G. Hogan. Mr. Lilburn waited on the Board m •reference to a new building for the Pukerua school, and he was informed tliat application was to be made to the Education Department immediately. Tho thanks of the Board were accorded to the Rangitikei,County Council for a. vote of £50 towards the'Martor. Technical School. ' The Education Department declined to grant money for a residence at Stoney Creek. The application to the Education Department for a grant towards the cost of additions to the Wanganui Technical School was refused. The Education Department wrote, informing the Board that application for a grant for work in connection with cookery and woodwork rooms at Palmerston North, should be made by the Palmerston .High School Board. Mr. Riminer's tender for the Foxton school, £1250, was accepted. The Marten Committee reported that they would be able to raise £150 towards Technical School rooms. BUILDING COMMITTEE.-The following recommendations were adopted: lenders to be called for latrines at Okaiawa; residence at Turakina and additions to Mangatoki residence; £/ o-vaaited for repairs to Bunnythorpa; Ternaoe End; Robbie's tender accepted for removing gallery; Awahun, £lt \ granted for shed and bathroom; committee at Oroua Bridge authorised to have chimney attended to; £8 granted to Kawahatau for repairs; £3 granted to Marion ior cupboard; tank tv be i-scnt to Stoney" Creek; architect mustructed toVget price* for \voi-k,-requir-ed by sanitary-inspector. Mr. Grummitt's proposal to inspect school children's teeth referred to Chief Inspector. It was decided to vote for Mr. Pirani's election to the Teachers' Training College Board of Advice, and to back up the Taranaki Board's request for greater representation. School Committees were authorised to give a holiday on Trafalgar Day if they think desirable. Mr. T. Currie, Pueroa, was authorised to establish a household school and appoint a teacher, subject to the Chisf Inspector's approval. Mr. J. W. Clapham was authorised to attend the Palmerston North classes. It was decided to inform the Makohau Committee that unless accommo-> elation was found for the teacher the Board would have to closa the school. The name of the Ongo road school was altered to Otairi. School reserve at the Mowhanau V dlage is to be offered for lease by tender.

The Mataroa school enlargement was fixed at a sixty .school. Tho Upper Tutaenui School Committee is to be asked to obtain cost of conveying pupils. Application is to be made to the' School Commissioners for two acres at Taonui. The report on school sites m th*i Apiti district was received and authorised to be forwarded to the Department.
