THE MISSING TORPEDO.
♦ , PER UNITED PBESS ASSOOIATION. Wellington, N ovember 6 The torpedo lost at Fort Ballance a few weeks ago has not been reoovered. The indicator attached to the snout failed to work, and as the weapon floats level with the water, and is almost the same colour, it eluded observation: Striot search along the rocks shows that the torpedo has not reaohed the shore yet, and there are hopes that the first southerly breeze may throw it up on one of the sady beaches. The reason of so much solicitude is that torpedos are very costly, aad there are only six or seven in. stock here. With a loaded head they represent £272 eacb, and with a dummy head, used for practice, somewhat less. One reason of the heavy price is that the freight and insurance on these dangerous machines is ex* tremely high.
