SPORTING NOTES.

(by matchlock.) The acceptances for the handicap events at the Wanganui Spring meeting have turned out satisfactory, which might have been expected, by the flowing terms in which the handicaps were received by sporting men, and by some of Mr Evitt's greatest opposers. The only mistake whioh I can Bee is that Strenuous could have had a few pounds ©i£ hit; t*ci, but as £« mnj. of the

others, they are pretty well all in their places. In the Wanganui Stakes 14 have accepted, out of 22 nominations, the most noticeable being Pearl, Lady Florin, aud Strenuous. Iv the Trial 14 also have accepted, out of 24, whilst in the Hurdles 9 out of 11 have paid up, the Napier representatives haviug cried "go." In the first-named event five out of the eight which have not acepted were assessed at under 7at, and in the Trial six out of the ten malcontents were also under the same weight, thus showing that Mr Evitfc oan frame a handioap to give satisfaction to owners ; which I always maintained he could do. Eleven entries have been received for the Maiden, and in which some " good oattle" are at that. With fine weather, we shall expect to have the best Spring meeting ever held in Wanganui. Mr JR. Higgie has disposed of the thoroughbred horse Cocksure to a Mr Munro, of Kew Plymouth' Mr K. MoElwain purchased the two booths for the forthcoming meeting. Mr C. Neilaon, of Marton, seems to have a big run on owners of mares thiß ! season with his thoroughbred horse Torpedo, by Musket— Fanny Fisher, | judging by the Use which I am informed he has. Amongst the mareß there are Camelia, Lady Athol, Escape, and My Dream. I wish to particularly to draw both ! trainers' and jockeys' attention to the ! rules which are posted up in the weighing room in the saddling paddock. MrT. Watt rode Whalebone in the Eakuranga Hunt Club Steeplechaafl Handicap at Auckland last week. He managed to secure second place, carrying list 101 b, being beaten by Torpedo, with 12st 41b. The Melbourne Cup of '87 is now a thing of the past, and many there are, no doubt, who have had a severe knook over the defeat of Algerian and Silver Prince, each of whom left the paddock red-<hot favourites. Both the winner and the runner up, with Australian Peer, who was third, have both proved that they are horses of the right sort. Dunlop; the winner, with 7st 12lb on his back, proved what he is by winning the fastest Melbourne Oup which has been run, viz, 3min 28£ sec, and that by a length and a half from Silvermine". At the A.J.C. meeting Dunlop ran second to Trident in the Graven Plate, weight for age ; won the Waverley Handicap, beating Algerian and Willeroo; and at the Y.B.G. first day's meeting ran second to Silvermine in the Melbourne Stakes, weight for age, and then on the seoond day appropriated the Melbourne Oup- Niagara ran a good horse, and had it not been that he was eased off a short time back would no doubt have been closer up ; and about Silver Prince it has been proved what was wanting with him, as well as with the rest of the Hon Bobinson's horses, — short of work— as while the condition lasted with him (Silver Prince), he was about. The following are Dunlop's performances previous to this Beaßon (they may be of interest, especially to those who have had the luok to draw out on him) :— His first appearance was as a 2"yearold, at the T-A.T.C. Summer meeting, on December 26th, when he ran seoond to Monte Christo, in the Juvenile stakes, 5 furlongs, V.8.0. Summer meeting, January Ist, third in Normanby Stakes, five furlongs, won by Monte Ohristo. Moonee Valley, January 17th, won the Trial Stakes, 5 furlongs. V.8.0. Autumn meeting, third in Ascot Yale Stakes, won by Uralla, three quarters mile ; same meeting, won Alisaged Stakes, 1 mile. 3 - year - old performances — V. A.T.C. Spring meeting, second in Caulfield guineas, won by Bingmaster, 1 mile*. V.S.C. Spring meeting, third in Royal Park Stakes, 2 miles, won by Trenton. Y.B.C, Autumn meeting, second in Free Handicap, 1£ miles, won by Cerise and Blue. Y.A.T.C, March meeting, ''wjftn'.the St Kilda Oupi'ij miles and a .distance. Y.A.T.C.. April meeting, won Glen Huntley Handioap, 1\ miles. Sydney Tattersall's June meeting, won Winter Stakes, 1£ miles'. 4-year-old performances — V.R.O. Autumn meeting, third in the Essendon Stakes, 1^ miles, won by Nelson, with Yoloano second.
