Vest TTneoetunAte. — We regret to hear that Mr, George Hutchison has been very UDfortunate lately in connection with his young and well bred horses. Allen, who has been for some months past engaged in survey work in connection with the ■ Mangapapa No. 1 Block, reports in terms of high, praise as lo the measuring chain, tho invention of Mr Atkins of this town. The chain is nude of pianoforte wire, and is not liable to stretch, and it seems to be superior to any of the other measuring methods in general use. Mr Allen, who used it to survey six miles along the Wiiitotsu'a River, (ind3 that by using Mr Atkins's invention, the risk of error was greatly diminished, and it was not necessary to undertake the laborious task of cutting a track through the bush ns a line for Lho tapo. Wo uudoratand thai Mr Atkins is ondoavouring to patent his measuring chain, though il is said that the principle of it was in work at Ttvanaki some years ago. A Vile Insinuation. — If any meaning at all can be gathered from our evening contemponvy's paragraphs in reference lo the chemists' accounts due from Mr Lingard's estate, the insinuation is that they were for deleterious drugs supplied for use at the - Bull Brewery. Inasmuch as Messrs Williamson and Co.'s account is entirely for family medicines and toilet requisites supplied to Air Lingard's family at his private residence, tho insinuation is particularly wide of the mirk. With regard to the other account, it should be hardly necessary to point out that isinglass is used solely for cleariug and fining beer, into the flavour or constituent parts of which it docs not outer. Isinglass is perfectly harmless, and its use is expressly permitted by law. Bishop Redwood. — Solomn high mass was celebrated yesterday morning at St. Mary's Church by tho Roy. Pkofessob Sample. — This exponent of tbo science of rapid and humane lioraetraining and management, returned fo Wanganui on Sa(.urdaj r after a very successful trip to New Plymouth., Hawera, and Waverluy, at eaoh of which towns ho displayed his system with great effect. On Saturday night he gave one of his amusing and instructive free lectures to a crowd o£ people in Mv Freeman R. Jackson's sale yards, and this morning he will hold his Jass at the same place, and there is little doubt that his old and new pupils will attend in force. A Timely Wobd op Defence. — Mr J. P. McGregor, of 19, Hotham -street, Melbourne, writes a letter to the Argus, in which he says : — I trust you will allow me space in your valuable columns fro a word or two in defence of the Hon. John Bryco, Native Minister for Now Zealand, and who has b?en so cruelly and foully slandered by Mr Busden in his " History (sic) of New Zealand." As to Mr Rueden's assertion tliafc Mr Bryce took parb in the murder of Maori women and ohildren during the last New Zealand war, I can only say that it is a cruel and malicious slander. I remember well all the circumstances in connection with that period, when Mr Bryce was in command of the Kai Iwi Volunteer Cavalry, and I can safely assert that no Maori woman or child ever met death at the hand of Mr Bryce, nor was he eyer the cause, either directly or indirectly, of any such actions. He has scattered to the winds the nest of thioves, murderers, and Hauhaus, who lived on the Waimate Plains in open defiance of the law. Ask tho settlers in that locality their opinion of John Bryce, and I can assure you, sir, that by them he is actually worshipped as the deliverer from the terrors of the past ten years. The thanks of all New Zealanders are dae to yov\r contributor, Mr H. Willoughby, in Saturday's issue, for his able defence of some of the heroes of the New Zealand wars, who have also been tradncecl. As for the noble and brare Von Teinsky, when the news of his death at the storming of Te-ngutu-o-te-manu reached Wanganui, hardly an eye but that was dimmed for the foes of one of the noblest soldiers that ever was under fire.
