(per united press association ) AUCKLAND. Juno 30. John Grappel and Charles Brown were committed for trial on a charge of robbery of jewellery from Henricksen's premises. At the inquest on the body of James Beatton a verdict was returned of accidentally drowned. Mr James Macfirlaue, shipping agent, identified the body as that of James Beatton, a native of Greenock, whom he had known 14 years ago as a miner and contractor. At a meeting of the Trades and Labour Council a resolution was passed earnestly protesting against any relaxation of the embargo upon Chinese immigration. It is decided to wire the resolution to the Hon. Mr Bolleston, Sir George Grey, and Messrs Swanson, Peacock, Hurst, and Darg*ville. NAPIER. June 29. A largely attended meeting of miners was held last evening at DiUman's Town re abolition of gold duty. The present *nd last County Chairman and the Mayor of Kumara spoke in favour of the abolition. The following resolutions were carried : — That, in the opinion of thu meeting, it is most desirable that the gold duty be abolished, it bjiug u'ljust and retarding mining industry. That miners and residents iv that district petition Parliament for its total abolition. That, in order to strengthen the hands of our representatives in Parliament, all other mining districts in the colony be invited to cooperate. That the County Chairman be asked to forward the first resolution to Mr Seddon, and also to Mr De Lautour (Chairman of the Goldfislds Committee), and ask him for his co-operation, and also that of all other goldfields members. A strong coumittee was appointed to draw up a petition and obtain signatures. CHRISTCHURCH. July 1. June 29. The New Zealand and Aiistraliao Land Company have chartered the sailing ships the Dunedin and Marlboro' for three voyages each to load frozen meat at Port Chalmers.
