THE COLLISION AT SEA.

News has been received here that the ships Hurunui and Waitara, both outward bound for New Zealand, came into collision in the Channel, and the latter vessel sank in four minutes. Twenty-five lives have been loss by the catastrophe. FUR.THER PARTICULARS. Later. The following are the names of the cabin passengers by the Waitara, who lost their lives by the foundering of the vessel after coUision with the Hurunui : — Martin Cheek, Arthur Noble, Mary Haylor, and Alioe Haylor. (per united press association.) Wellington, June 26. . In connection with the sinking of ,the ship Waitara, it is mentioned that Mr Cheek, one of the cabin passengers by the Waitara, reported as having been drowned, was brother-in-law of Mr John Watt, bookseller, of this city. He was accompanied by his wife, who went borne to meet him some months ago. Apprentice Cotterill was a son of the late Dr Cotterill, of Nelson. The insurances on the hull of the Waitira are not definitely known here yet, but, il arrangements hold good • now whioh existed some time back, the South British, National, and. Union offices will have £8000 each on her. The Shipping Company has an insurance fund of their own, whioh is liable tothe extent of £3000.. The Colonial lnsurauel Companies nearly ail have heavy lines on her cargo.
