DUNEDIN GAOL ENQUIRY.
SERIOUS OHABGBS. (pee united pbess association.) Dcnedin, Juno 21. The gaol inquiry commenced this moruing. At the outset, Mr Caldwell the governor, made strenuous efforts ro get an adjournment until his counsel could attend, but the Commissioners decided to proceed with the investigation, leaving it optional for Mr Stout to cross-examine the witnesses at a future stage. Mr Caldwell then retired, and two prisoners ware then examined, and gave evidence that great cruelty had been practised within the gaol walls. The inquiry was adjourned until tomorrow. Later. At the gaol inquiry to-day the evidence consisted of written complaints made to the Inspector of Prisons and tho Minister of Justice by prisoners. These were now t^ned by the said prisoners.
