June 20.
The dispute between the contractor for the railway station reclamation and the Government, arising out of theinablily of Government to place the contractor in possession of the works, and subsequently handing over the contract to the Harbour Board, still remains unsettled, but the Harbour Board have taken possession of the ground and proceed with the work.
Thirty- two navvies, under engagement to Danaher, the contractor, left to-day for Wellington, to be employed on tie Wellington-Manawatu and Foxton railway. TAUPO. June 20. Mr Wright has received instructions from the Survey Office at Auokland to make a plan of the Government Hot Springs, with the improvements that have been made by Mr Lofley. It is understood that Government intend to build a sanatorium. WELLINGTON. June 20. The three men who were arrested for creating a disturbance at the opening of the Salvation Army coinpaign were fined £5 and costs, or 14 days' imprisonment, and one of them for assaulting the police was sentenoed to seven days, without the option of a fine. In the latter case notice of appeal was given. The captain of the barque Estrella, from London, reports that on the 20th February, in lat. 47deg 4min N., long, odeg 39miu N., they foil in with a barque dismasted. She appeared to be a Norwegian vessel, and the decks had been clean swept. Thre was no one on board, and her name could not be ascertained, as it was nowhere visible.
Intelligence was received from Christchurch this morning by the directors of the "Wellington Meat Export Company that several intending shippers of frozen meat . by the steamer Doric, in September, have been offered a premium of 2s per head for the space allotted them in that vessel, so satisfied are merchants and others with the prioes realised by the British King's cargo of mutton. G-KEYMOUTH. June 20. " The Vagabond " will be a passenger by the Graf Con for the North. He visited the coal mines pesterday. CHKISTCHUROH. Juno 20. The agents for Shaw, Saville, and Albion Company (liraited)lme of ships, have received cable advices to the effect that instructions havo been given to Messrs Petor Denny and Co. to build steamers without delay for the New Zealand trade. Two men, named Burrell and King, had a fight at Flaxton yesterday ; Burrell knocked King down, then kicked him about the head and chest, breaking several ribs, and inflicting serious internal injuries. Burrell was arrested, and King is in the hospital. E. Dombraia, while shooting to-day at Port Levy, accidentally discharged his gun, the contents of which tore his left arm, and entered his breast, which bled freely. June 19. The dead body of a man is reported to be lying in the River Ashley, and Sc-rgaant Barlow, of Rangiora, has gone to bring it in. He had not returned when the despatch left. In consequence of the action of the Sydenha.ni Licensing Court with reference to protests made by Linwood residents against the .licensing of the hotel at Lancaster Park, a clause is to be introduced into Mr M. W. Green's Local Option Bill on a radius instead of a district principle. All petitiens bearing on the Bill should be in Wellington before the 4th of July.
The next half yearly examinations are to be held in August instead of September. There are 61 applicants for examination as solicitors, and two as barristers. Three gentlemen previously admitted elsewhere desire to prove their qualifications for admission to the New Zealand Bar, and one admitted elsewhere wishes to qualify as a solicitor. Messrs T. S. Weston and Allen Holmes are the examiners.
The Pluinpton Ground Company offer ten shillings each for live hares delivered at Templeton. A boy, son of Mr T. S. Weston, was making gunpowder when the untinister exploded, inflicting nasty wounds on his face and hands.
Mr John Holmes has given the Agricultural and Pastoral Association five guineas for a prize for boots, five for woollen clothiug, mid three for knitted woollen apparel. DUNfiDltf. June 20.
The Dunedin Gaol inquiry bi-gius tomorrow, and will be open to the Press. There was good competition for laud under the perpetual leasing Bj'btein in Wendon and Wendonaide io-day. A considerable advance on the upset price was offered. In one case there were 10 applications, and the successful applicant gave 4s 6d above the upset. An important step in the liquidation of Guthrie and Larnaoh's Company has been completed by the sale of the re maining assets. The price, it is understood, is one that will cover all ascertained liabilities, and the expenses of liquidation, and leave a dividend of five shillings to the shareholders. George Moran, for arson at Kakarai, was commited for trial to-dry. His house which was burnt was unoccupied. Kerosene was discerned about the burning house and on his clothes, and he gave various accounts of how kerosene came there.
The second perpetual leasing trial was very successful. ,he tenders were opened to-day, for a block of 4,500 acres at Wakaia, aud except for one Bection there was good competition, a number of tenders running from two to ten. As much as Cs. 7d per acre was obtained where the upset wa3 2s.
