WANGANUI-WAITOTARA HIGHWAT BOARD.

♦ The usual monthly meeting of this Board took place yesterday. Present — Messrs W. H. Watt, M.H.B. (chairman), Kobertson, Moore, and Smith. Minutes. — The minutes of the pre\lous meeting were read and confirmed. M/XWell. — Mr May applied for compensation for an acre of land (valued at J10) taken for a road nearMaxelltown ; but the Board, after hearing a report from Mr Atkins, their engineer, declined the application— Mr May then asked to be allowed the cost of fencing in his land along the road, a distance of sixteen and a half chaina. He estimated that a wire fence could be put up for £20. — The chairman thought that, considering timber was on the ground, a fence could be erected fer less than that. — Mr Smith said that the land was worth £5 per acre, and not

£10, as estimated by Mr May. The piece in question would have no frontage till the road wbs made. — The chairman said that the road would open up sections which would contribute very little to the Board, and it would probably take 12 or 13 years' rates to pay Mr May's claim. — On the motion of Mr Moore, seconded by Mr Smith, it was resolved, That, on a fence being required and erected, the Board will give £8 towards the cost. Blueskin.— Mr Eitehie attended the Board to ask that something might be done to the Blueskin or New Middle Line, a road leading to Foreman's^near,, Westmere. — The ohairman said that the road was a legalised one, twenty years old, but did not at present go to, the Brunswick.— Mr Bitchie l Baid . thatJ the road in question led out of the main road and was fifty ohains iri lerigtht It required metalling, having been impass--able all the winter. The chairman' said that several ratepayers used the road and the Board derived something from ' it. — Mr Robertson reminded tbie 'Board, .. that in all probability they would get no ' L Bubsidy that year, and therefore' it would r r . be better to have a general report from 51 -" the foreman upon all roads which really • required to be made, passable".— Mr " Ritchie said that £50 in rates hadal--: ready been contributed in regard to this road, and he would be quite oontent if : £10 only were laid out on it. — Kesolved, That the foreman report i , on. jtheY matter at the next meeting. ■ ■' :< - > ; -••• , Mosstown. — A Ideputation "of Mosstown ratepayers waited npon*tne'. Board ! -C to ask them to metal- i i \TOberforcja and Brougham streets in' "We* ■Mos'stown '- township. M r Borrow acted as ! spokesman, and explained that ', the streets . were boggy and full of holes," and that * children were unable to gee to the pub'-. . lie school. The settlers had themselves done a good deal towards these roads, withouthitherto asking the Board for anything. — Several • other members of the.a deputation explained the deplorable and 7 dangerous condition' of the roads. — In reply to the chairman, Mr Borrow.- said' 1 the necessary gravel was close atha'nd and the work asked for would not cost muoh. — :Mr Bobertson thought' the 'l Board could- only at' present 1 Seal, with this matter in the same way as the last. 1 - — Mr -Borrow said there was 'no road,., under the Board so bad as this,Vand ! fie'; hoped the deputation would hot be 1 required to come again, after putting- ., up with such' a bog for so many-year s^tt: ' Mr Moore thought that, before, the Board undertook any work whatever,;^ they should know exactly, what they had to do, and how much money to allot amongst the various roads.'— -\i Besolved, that the foreman report on the question at the next meeting. ."••'"■ -"i 1 Karaka Hill. — Mr William Taylor , attended and asked the Board to : form.^ the road leading up this hill, through "" Stent's, near Waitotara. — Mr Smith., said that he had not forgotten' this road, which would be one of the first attended to in the ward.— Applicant said that the road was 40 chains long, and would-nofc.;; probably cost more than £100. — ,Mr Smith moved that the engineer bein-.lf structed to prepare plans and: specifications by tho next meeting — seconded by Mr Moore' and carried ■ -i .i! ."• ,••■'£ New Western Eoad. — Mr' Wright ■ applied to the Board that the portion of' " this road which enters the Brunswick' Line at an angle be continued' straight,.-: into that line. It was' explained that the - piece of road in question was formed and metalled, and that if it were abandoned, and another substituted it might ; give applicant a shorter access to town but would benefit no one else. — Eesolved that Mr Annabell report on the matter. . -Kal-Iwi Eoad. — A. deputation, con- - sisting of Messrs Blair, James Hair, and Murray, waited upon the Board to ask that certain metalling might be done ■ on this road. — Mr Blair said that all '. they wished was that a fair share of the ' "' rates paid by them might be expended on it. It was not fair that their in^ney should be tßken away and expended on other people's roads. — The chairman I said that the application was a reasonable ODe, provided the Board was in ' funds, as a large amount of rates was gathered out of that district, from the. sea to the main road. — Mr Bobertson - advocated tho adoption of the same plan in this as in other cases. . Unless - a general report upon all the roads requiring repair was before the Board, their money would be muddled away and nothing to show for it. — The chair* • man asked if there was no gravel at Southern Grove which would be available for the work. —Mr Hair replied in ' the negative. — Matter postponed till ' the next meeting, for a report of theforeman of. works. , !Tawaboa Eoad. — Mr Manrey at- ■' tended and asked, that not more than, forty feet wide be taken for the road. — ■ - Mr Annabell's report was read upon • this road, which it is proposed to layoff 1 ' as a line of communication between the * River Bank (through Section 200) to '.' the new Missionary Line, and thence ' into the Brunswick. — Mr Bobertson said that there was no public demand ' for the proposed road, for the Missionary Line had been closed for two years. The use of the new road would be to afford a direct communication from the Bruns- . wick to cross the river, instead of hay- ... ing as at present to go very far round. .. It would also be a straight line from the Kai Iwi to the river. — The Board • informed Mr Marney that certainly not • more than forty feet would be required' : for the road, when laid off. : Foreman's Keport. — Mr Boots' re- ' ' port was read. It stated that Mr Harris had accepted the; offer of the [ Board in giving the thirty-three feet, '[ instead of the twenty feet as he offered . for the alteration of the Alma Road running through his property, and the thirty- three feet had been;taken acoord- ■;] ingly. ' The wire fence had been ',■ erected, and the sand cutting and fillings had been completed. The road was now a far superior one to the'i: old one, and it was shorter. The' ' work had been done for the limited '• ' r sum passed for it. The horse and dray -. had been employed to draw furze on the Mosstown Eoad to stop the blowing sand in one of the cuttings. The fo-e r . man also asked the attention of the. ~ Board to the metalling required to bedone in the district, as this was the season for the work, and it should be done before too late in the season. He would ask also that Mr MoOaul's attention should be drawn again to the Aramoho culvert, where his ram his placed, as by this last fresh the pipe was blocked again, and some day a heavy expenditure might be oaxised as the filling was only pumice. PohtjeboA Boad. — An application from Mr Francis May for gravelling on this road, was referred to the foreman • for a report. NtJKTJMARTT STATION EoAd. — Communications from Mr Betts and Mr Hutchison upon the question of obtaining a valid conveyance of this road from Mr Lowe or Mr Bussell were read and received. Accounts. — Various accounts amounting to £74 2s 8d were passed for pay- ■ ment. After transacting certain unimportant business the Board adjourned.
