Intelligence is to band that the steamship Gulf Finland, 1586 tons, bound from Melbourne, which went ashore in the Red Sea on the 21st ultimo, still lies stranded, and it is feared that nothing can prevent ber beooming a total wreck. , The French Government objects to tbe proposal that there should alone be an English Controller-General in Egypt. It is hoped that the difficulty which has arisen will be smoothed by Earl Dnfferin on bis arrival in Egypt. In the House of Commons to-day, Sir Charles Dilko, Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, announced that information bad been received from Khartoun, dated Monday, 30th October, stating that the false prophet bad been defeated at Soudan with heavy loss. There is an epidemic of small-pox amongst bis followers. Tbe Premier made a statement in tbe House to-day, in tbe course of wbioh he announced that tbe Egyptian Government will share with England the expenses of tbe occupation of Egypt by tbe British t**oops since tbe defeat of Arabi at Tel-el Kebir. The Premier further stated that Government would not require to ask for any further wai oredit during the present session. (Eeceived Nov. 4, 2.30 p.m.) Consols remain at 102^. The bank rate of disoount remains al 5, and tbe market rate at 8£ per cent. The total reserve in notes and bullior in tbe Bank of England is £9,200,000. New Zealand securities 5 per cen 10-40 loan, 105J. Five per cent 1889 loan, 104-J ex div. Four and a-balf per cent 1879-19& loan, 101£. Colonial breadstuffs are quiet at 49--for Adelaide, and 43s to 46s for Nev Zealand wheat ex warehouse. Adelaide flour, 345. Australian tallow remains at 43s 6( for best beef, and 46s for best mutton. November 3. In the House of Commons last night tbe amendment proposed by Mr Gibson requiring that tbe closure should onb be adopted by two-thirds of a majorit* of tbe House, was finally rejected b; 3G2 to 238.
