WANGANUI REGATTA COMMITTEE.

-.. ," ■■:■•-• I. ■■♦ — •;' ■ ■• ■ . The following report and -balancesheet of the. Regatta' Committee were placed before^the 'meeting 'held, on last Friday night :r- '" " ,'_"", '•'' ' '•"''■' " teepo^T.^ln submitting' the record oi.th'e.iripst important boating transactipn'pf thepast season, so far as Wanganui. is ; concerned, your .committee ; have to impress,. upon the supporters, of. the regatta , a-, number , of important considerations. A meeting of boating men and .others interested in aquatic sports Tyasheld on Friday, the 24th " Februarylast, at •which ..a committee was ap-' pointed; consisting of the captains and secretaries of 7 the two clubs and' six' others, with power, to add. to- their number; and at- a' 'subsequent meeting Messrs Kohn.Xewis, Gibbs, Ward,' and Lawi' were added : to the number. The . r.egatta, was held on the 14th April last," bright but windy weather, and from a -boating. -point of view, the arrangements] were most successful, although in the principal events the local clubs alone contended. Tour committee, however, cannot but record the fact that the Junior Outrigged and Ten Stone -Baces were -secured by the Foxton crews, who, with the exception of the. Wellington Star Club, who secured the Junior Fours, were the only visitors the Regatta Committee had to entertain. So far as the. .other ..eyents,_were .concerned; the Waiiganui Bowing Club carried off the honours, the Union beiDg unfortunate in the contests, but presenting, as they always do, a'goodly front to the public at'large. Financially speaking, your, committee can congratulate ' the subscribers; after paying everything there is a balance of £16 in hand, a result for, ■Vrtribh your committee most sincerely and gratefully thank Mr William Alexander, and those- other gentlemen,-, who took upon themselves 'the' unpleasant office of collectors. This financial result is also due no doubt to the efforts of the officials of- the . regatta, who worked '■ might iand main to see that the day passed, off successfully. Before closing this-,. report,: your committee,- in. the interest of boating, wish to impress upon its supporters the desirability of unity, mutual good feeling, : and' thorough businesslike arrangements. With that "view. ;a; general meeting of the regatta supporters has been .called very early this year, and it ia sincerely to he hoped. that 1 the necessary arrangements will be , made; at this meetingrto make the reg&tta of- 1883 a -greater success than hitherto.- Boating' has become a' thoroughly well-established and favourite sport in Wangariui, and every acquatic centre in New Zealand looks to us not only for encouragement but for example; ', Why, therefore, should 'not all kinds of distinction be sunk in oblivion, and a committee formed, consisting of representatives of all the local clubs.-' This committee would sarily be a ; strong and influential body, and not only could they arrange the date and particulars of the coming regatta, but also regulate local matches and'other, matters which would place rowing in the position' it should occupy upon' our 'noble river. Your committee, in surrendering their trust for the past, have . every hope that the suggestions they make will receive due consideration. '' Bht above all it is important that there should be formed n united assotion for the coast, which would enable our local oarsmen to contend with advantage against all comers.
