(special to peess association.) • (Received October 29, 12 noon.) Melbourne, Ocfc 28. The forenoon was overcast and threatening, but no rain fell. There \vn~ however a very cold wind blowing. T •.■ ittendance was estimated at 30,000, j ■ : the lawn presented a particularly i aii'int appearance for a Derby" day, ' jut his Excellency the Marquis of Normanby was not present owing to the. : recent death of his mother. The course was in excellent condition. Ten candidates for the Derby faced the starter. The betting at the post was even on Navigator, Segenhoe 7 to 2, Guesswork 6 to 1, Frying Pan 10 to 1, Boolka 10 to 1, Standard Bearer 100 to 6, King of the Vale 100 to 5, Oalma 100 to 4. Calma was very, fractious at the start, and there were three false starts, but when the flag fell finally the start was an excellent one. Guesswork was the first to show in front, with Navigator, Boolka, and Aide-de-Oamp in close attendance almost in a cluster. Calma, Segenhoe, Frying Pan, and Transferred, came nest, followed by Standard Bearer, with King of the Vale last. Ab they came round the turn Guesswork tpok the lead, followed closely by Transferred, Boolka, Aide-de-Camp, Calma, Frying Pan, and Navigator, King of. the Vale: being close up. Transferred soon made an effort, and deprived • Guesswork of the first place, and -at the end of the first half mile was half a length a head of Guessworks, who had a lead of some' six lengths from Boolka, while two lengths behind came Segenhoe,' Navigator, King of the Vale,' and Standard' Bearer all together.' At the' back of the course ' Guesswork and Transferred were leading close together, while Frying Pan and Calma were ia close attendance, Segenhoe, Standard Bearer, and King of the Vale ■ being next close up. Approaching the distance post Navigator began to close up on Frying Pan, and soon secured third place,, fol ' lowed closely by Segenhoe. A t the carriage paddock it was evident that Guesß-; work and Transferred were done.
