A meeting was held here to-day, at | which twenty-one captains of vessels 1 now in port were present, to consider rates for freights upon wool, and they unanimously resolved that no wool \ should be taken on board at a lower : rate than £d to |d per pound, pending further instructions from owners of vessels. The New Zealand Loan and Mercan- ■ tile Agency Company (limited) held their , opening wool sale for the season today. The catalogue was fairly reprei sented. The attendance at the sale was very large, and representatives from all ' parts of Europe and from America were i present in greater numbers than tit any i previous sale. The bidding was a'ni- • mated, and brisk competition was ex- > perienced, nearly every lot on the i catalogue being sold. A general adf vance of fully a Id per pouDd was obtained for sound, well grown wools ' of all classes. The highest price realised > for greasy merino was Is l^d, for greasy • cross-bred, Is, and for scoured merino, • Is 10*1.
