October 19. , The police intimated that they would ■ not proceed with the charge of attempted 1 suicide preferred against Jane Grayon, '■ on accoant of her low nervous state. '• She has been permitted to go to her 1 home. 1 The following addition to the listß of ! provisional directors in the Equitable Insurance Association are announced : — ! Wellington, Hon J. Martin ; Napier, Mr P. Button, M.H.E., and H. C. Eobjohns. The following comprise the Greymouth Provisional Board : — The J Hou H. Lahniann, M.L.C., T, R. Guin-
ness (County chairman), M. Kennedy, D. McLean, W. Perkins, Dr Morce, - F. D. Dupre, W. S. Smith, J. J. Blackmore, W. Kerr. The share list closes on November Ist. Over a hundred thousand shares have already been applied for. Instructions have been issued to the Public Works Department to put a large formation contract in hand on the Otago Central Railway. It having been rumoured here tii'.'. Mr Hannay, Superintendent of Bail «• j 3 for the Middle Island, was to be iumoved to Wellington, tho Star to-night ■ authoritatively contradicts the rumour, and states that the Government never had any such intention. It will be remembered that some time ago Farnie, a school teacher, was given three months' notice by the Education Board for having written a letter to a newspaper, but, on expressing his willingness to obey a certain rule laid down by the Board on such matters, he was reinstated : that is he was allowed to enter the Board's service again, although not allowed to retain his former position as teacher in the Normal School. Eecently a vacancy|has occurred in that soho jl in a position higher than that previously held by Farnie, who applied for it, and to-day the Board by six votes to three appointed him to it. This has caused Mr A. O. Begg to resign his seat on the Normal School Committee of the Board. A. lengthy discussion took place over the whole matter to-day. Mr Begg wishes a second inquiry held into the working of the Normal School, a former one he alleged having been unsatisfactory ; whereupon Mr Fergus suggested that an inquiry was desirable into the whole working of the Board's office. Mr Fulton expressed a strong opinion that the Board had made a mistake in ■ its original action about Farnie. Eventually the following notice of motion was given for next meeting : — "That, as statements have been made on several occasions by Messrs Green and Fergus at meetings of the Board reflecting on the conduct of certain of the Board's officers, they be requested to formulate these charges so that they may be investigated and their truth or otherwisjj substantiated." Mr Green 6aid if this were carried he would resign his seat. Such is the history at its present state of the second Farnie disturbance in the Education Board.
