j October 19. A rumour has travelled round town b to-night that small-pox has broken out - in a Chinaman's place in Lichlieldf street. The health officer visited it, and found about a dozen Chinamen smoking - opium, who all appeared healthy enough, - and no basis could be found for the s rumour, c It is now said that Hempson never , left by the steamer on Saturday at all, 3 and that lie was seen at Kangiora on • Monday, or Tuesday. > The funeral of the late Colonel Packe took place this afternoon, when a large number followed the remains to their ~ 3 last resting place. The body was borne 3 to the gravo by members of the old r No. 2 C.B.V. (now defunct), of which 3 Colonel Paeke was captain, and was 3 followed by large numbers of prominent residents and well - known Volunteer - officials. In deference to the wishes of the deceased no music was permitted, 3 and no funeral volley was fired. Other forgeries of Hempton's hare I come to light to a large amount.
