THE TROOPS AT GABUL.
. -« ■ AN OFFICIAL DESPATCH FROM GENERAL BURROWS.
(sPEOIAIr TO SXDVEY PAPERS.) London, 4th August. The British troops at Cabul, under the command of General Roberts, include the 60th, 92nd, 72nd Infantry Regiments, and 6th Regiment of Lancers. Official despatches have been received from General Burrows in reference to the late disastrous engagement between his brigade and Ayoub Khan's army. The despatches are very brief, and give only a few leading particulars of the disaster. General Burrows states his force numbered 3000, and of these 1000 effected their escape. The attack was commenced by the British, and not by the Afghan troops, and a Blight advantage was gained at the onset, but the enemy was posted on advantageous positions and in overwhelming force, \their .numbers being estimated at from 12,000 to 15,000. The British fought with characteristic bravery and determination, but, from the overwhelming number of the enemy, the General saw that the total destruction of his force was inevitable unless he ordered a retreat. . Thiswas done, and one-third of his men and a quantity of war material, including four guns, were saved. The battle took place on tho 27th July.
