CHRISTCHURCH.

May 20. A special train conveys members of the Press and visitors to Leeston tonight, on tiie occasion of the Premier addressing the electors of Selwyn. At yesterday's quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, a. long discussion took place relative to the removal of the railway staff. A motion for a monster petition to Government was lost, on the ground that the proceeding would be undignified. A resolution was carried urging tho members for Christchurch to bring the matter under tho notice of Parliament during the coming session. During Tuesday's gale the Ashburton slaughter-house was blown down, burying two men who wero working in the building at tho time. After being dug out, the men soon recovered with medical attention. They are cut and bruised about their heads, but not seriously injured.
