WANGAEHU HIGHWAY BOARD

A meeting of this body was held at the Rutland Chambers, on Saturday afternoon last. — Present Mr A. Higgie (chairman), and Messrs Richards, Fleetwood, and Owen wardens. Minutes of special meeting, and of previous meeting, were read and confirmed. Treasurer’s report, and Foreman of Works’ report were read. Outward correspondence was read and approved. DEPUTATION. Mr Baker and Mrs Harrison attended as a deputation, and complained of the bad state of the Warrengate Line. The Foreman was instructed to have the water tables cleaned out. Messrs Kennedy and McGregor attended as a deputation, and complained of the bad state of the Upokongaro Road. The Board stated they were short of funds, but they would have the water tables cleaned out, which the Foreman was instructed to have done. Mr Laird attended, and asked the Board to open the Waikupa Road, and was informed that tenders would be called for shortly, for fencing through Mr McGregor’s place. UPOKONGARO ROAD The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr Cullinane, and remind him of his promise to make the Matatara branch road, and to inform him that if he was still willing the Board would open the road. CORRESPONDENCE. H. J. Reid, Foreman of Works, wrote asking to have his salary monthly. Application granted. From Harry Williams, asking the Board to lay off a road on his property on No 2 Line. The Secretary said he understood that was the same road as applied for by Mr Brown in December last, and some time previously by Mr Beauchamp. The Secretary was instructed to reply that the Board would open the road on the same terms as those proposed to Mr Brown, and that Mr Williams would be required to deposit a sum to be decided upon at a future meeting before any work was commenced. From E. J. Armstrong, Wellington, asking for employment. Secretary to reply in the negative. A. Filmer, applying for account to be paid re Upokongaro, and for an allowance in consequence of alteration of specification. Held over till next meeting, the Secretary in the meanwhile to ask Mr Garrett as to allowance for alteration of specifications. From R. T. Sheild re road, held over till next meeting, Mr Somerville not being in attendance. The Chairman said Mr Somerville was ill. PIKI PIKI CULVERT. The Foreman was authorised to have 4 chains of metalling done at Piki Piki culvert. WAIKUPA. Moved by Mr Higgie, and seconded by Mr Fleetwood, That tenders be called for fencing the Waipuka road, through Mr A. McGregor’s, to be at next meeting. Carried. OPENING TENDERS. Mr Fleetwood stated that at this end of last month there was no quorum present at the regular meeting time, and that as tenders were to be opened for work much required on the Makirikiri, Mr Campbell and himself had opened them, and considered them too high, the lowest being 8s 6d per chain ; had instructed the Foreman to arrange, if possible, for the work to be done for 6s 6d per chain ; if not able, the Secretary to call another special meeting. They also had authorised the acceptance of Messrs Brownlee and Allen’s offer, to do 10 chains on the Makirikiri for 30s per chain and 15s each for three culverts. The Foreman of Works said he had arranged with Hackett for 6s 6d per chain. The action of Messrs Fleetwood and Campbell was approved. BANK ACCOMMODATION. The Secretary was instructed to see the Banker, with a view to get a further advance, and to explain to him it would be only a temporary accommodation, as rates to the amount of £1200 were due, and Government subsidy of £639 in October next, in addition to a further subsidy in the following March. The following accounts were passed for payment :— Messrs Roscoe, Paure Lake road, £3 17s ; Flannery Bros., River Bank, £4 18s ; G. Moir, repairs to pick, 5s ; E. N. Liffiton, stamps and telegrams, 15s 6d ; Chronicle account, £6 1s 3d ; P. Talty and Burns, for labour, £8 8s and £6 16s respectively ; Howard, work on No. 3 Line, £20 14s ; McKay, repairs to bridge, 14s 6d ; Hackett and McCarthy, £2 ; Beard, maintenance No. 3 extras, £27 16s ; Atkinson, repairs to River Bank, £6 5s ; Foreman of Works’ salary, from April 6th to May 31st, amounting to £22 7s, was ordered to be paid. The Foreman handed a certificate of completion of Hackett’s contract on Makirikiri, amounting to 121 chains, at 6s 6d, £39 6s 6d. Total accounts passed, £150 3s 9d. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Richards, That during the winter months the time of meeting be 11 a.m. instead of 2 p.m. as hitherto. The meeting then closed.
