CHRISTCHURCH.
June 15. Further reports from the country state that part of the Albury branch railway has been damaged by floods. Other places, north and south, hare suffered severely, and in some eases it -will take several mouths to repair damages. A public meeting re the Local Option Bill was held last night. It was very wet, and there was a small attendance. The principal speakers were the Rev Primate of Now Zealand, the Rev J£. 0. M. Watson, and Mr Stout, M.H.R. Several resolutions were unanimously carried, the principal one being, " That, in the opinion of this meeting, the principle embodied in the Local Option Bill is equitable, practicable, and likely to afford public relief from many of the evils resulting from the consumption o£ intoxicating liquors. At a conference of the school committee, last night, resolutions were carried in favour of free compulsory education and the establishment of secondary schools, and largo powers being granted to the committees. The weather is still wet.
