Wanganui Chronicle, AND PATEA AND RANGITIKEI ADVERTISER. "NULLA DIES SINE LINEA." MONDAY, OCTOBER 30th, 1876.
The third annual competition under the auspices of the Rangitikei Educa-r tional Association is announced to take place at Turakiua on the 9th proximo. The programmes of the various subjects in which both senior and junior competitors are to be examined have been for months before the several affiliated schools, and both teachers and pupils have been diligently employing their time in the hope of carrying off honors at a competition which has hitherto proved well worthy of the name, and which has now an established reputation. Taking advantage of the experience gained during the two previous examinations at Marton and at Bulls, the officers of the Association have endeavoured so to perfecb the various details in the arrangements, which materially contribute to success, that it is probable the forthcoming educational tournament amongst the youth of Rangitikei and adjoining districts will be even more successful than those which have preceded it. The services of a number of gentlemen in and beyond the limits of the district, who take a lively interest in the cause of education, have been secured to perform the onerous and responsible duties of examiners in the several branches of knowledge, and generally sufficient care has been taken in completing the arrangements to ensure successful results. The impetus which the efforts of this Association have given to the progress of education throughout the district of Rangitikei is really very marked ; and the solid acquirements of some of the competitors, which the examinations have broughb to light, would put to the blush many lads who have all the facilities, conveniences, and advantages in the pursuit of knowledge which residence in the town affords. We had anticipated that the laudable example of Rangitikei, in thus affording a powerful and healty stimulus to the cause of education, would have excited a little emulation in other quarters, and that Wanganui would not have been slow to exhibit her appreciation of the merits of a good example. However, beyond a faint acknowledgment of the beneficial results accruing from the operations of the Association in the adjoining district, nothing definite or practical has been arrived at. It is satisfactory, however, to learn that the interst in these annual competitive examinations has so far increased aud extended that several candidates from Wanganui are likely to enter the lists at the forthcoming competition at Turakina. We trust that there will be no hitch in the arrangements, . and that the results will prove as satisfactory as the zealous efforts of the members of the Association, and the diligence of the scholars, entitle them to expect.
